Bagbin to rule on petition seeking removal of 4 MPs

Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin is expected to give a ruling on a petition seeking to remove four sitting MPs from the House, today, Thursday, October 17.

The MP for Agona West, Cynthia Morrison; MP for Suhum, Kojo Asante; Fomena MP Andrew Asiamah and NDC MP Amenfi Central, Peter Kwakye Ackah have all filed to contest as independent candidates in the upcoming December parliamentary polls.

It is for this reason that the Minority wants Bagbin to declare their seats vacant.

If Speaker Bagbin upholds the call to dismiss the MPs as was done to Andrew Asiamah in 2020, the NPP’s majority in Parliament could be at risk, as the Majority will now be the Minority which will give the NDC an upper hand in the chamber.

But one of the affected MPs, Peter Kwakye Ackah, says he is not worried about whatever ruling the Speaker of Parliament will give.

“I have not declared that I have left the party. I am only declaring my intention that in the next parliament, I would want to be an independent candidate. And so if somebody is also an NPP or NDC now, and he wants to go independent, he is not saying that he is leaving NPP.

“He is saying that in the next parliament, he doesn’t want to go with NPP again. I believe that is how I understand it.

“If you take any action, there should be a reaction. So you must be ready for it. Because if you say you are going independent and the Speaker rules that your seat is vacant, what can you do? You cannot challenge them because they have been imprisoned already,” he told Citi News.
