Former New Patriotic Party (NPP) National Chairman, Paul Afoko, has announced his intention to contest the party’s National Chairmanship position, urging members to move beyond internal divisions and work together to rebuild the party.
Speaking to the media in Accra on July 14, 2026, Mr. Afoko dismissed claims that he is aligned with the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), arguing that such accusations are unfair and undermine party unity.
He said his family has a long-standing history within the Danquah-Dombo-Busia tradition, tracing their roots to the Northern People’s Party, one of the political traditions that contributed to the formation of the NPP.
According to him, his past experiences, including his suspension from the party in 2015, have not diminished his commitment to the NPP.
“I was suspended by the NPP, but the pain is gone. I forgive a lot because if you dwell on emotions, you will never go anywhere,” Mr. Afoko said.
He criticised what he described as a culture of branding party members with dissenting views as sympathisers of the NDC, urging members to embrace constructive criticism and differing opinions.
“Why are we always quick to label people we disagree with in the party as NDC? If you disagree with someone, listen.
You may pick even one idea from what they say and develop something better,” he stated.
Mr. Afoko also called on the party to acknowledge its shortcomings and demonstrate humility as it seeks to reconnect with Ghanaians.
“We have to project humility and accept that we have made mistakes. We are not infallible,” he said.
The former NPP Chairman indicated that, if elected, he would rely heavily on the youth and women in shaping the future of the party, stressing that their participation must be integrated into the party’s overall strategy and decision-making process.
He further urged party members to put aside factional interests and unite behind a common purpose, insisting that the NPP needs the contributions of all its members to regain public confidence and return to power.
