President John Mahama has announced plans to actively involve community leaders including Chiefs in the fight against galamsey
The soon to be rolled out plan, he said will also involve the youth in the reclamation of degraded lands
According to the President, the difficult task to sanitize degraded l forest reserves, water bodies and the environment cannot be successful if it’s left to the security agencies alone
“The whole country is appalled at the extensive environmental degradation that has been caused by the illegal small scale mining popularly known as galamsey.”he said
President John Mahama who was addressing a durbar of Chiefs, clergy and people of the Western Region as part of his Thank You Tour of the region was quick to add that, Lands and Natural Resources Minister, Armah Kofi Boah is already formulating policies and strategies in combating the menace
” Your own son Armah Kofi Boah is formulating strategies for the implementation of our manifesto promise in dealing with this galamsey menace” he intimated
“Our plan will involve the communities including the Chiefs and the youth to take part in protecting their lands, forest and water bodies. We are not going to make it the responsibility of only the security agencies. We will take urgent steps to halt mining in our forest reserves and water bodies” he explained
