The Chinese community in Ghana has condemned the spread of false and misleading claims surrounding the August 6, 2025, crash of a Z9 Chinese-made helicopter operated by the Ghana Armed Forces in Brofoyedur, Adansi West District, Ashanti Region.
The tragic accident claimed the lives of all eight passengers, including Ghana’s Minister of Defence, Hon. Edward Omane Boamah, Minister of Environment, Hon. Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed, and senior military officers.
A black box was recovered from the wreckage and is under military investigation, with findings yet to be released.
In the absence of any official report, some commentators have circulated unfounded claims suggesting that the helicopter’s Chinese origin makes it inferior or unsafe.
The Chinese community has strongly rejected such allegations, stressing that they not only misrepresent the aircraft’s quality but also unfairly tarnish the reputation of the Ghana Armed Forces.
According to a statement issued by Jean Maurellet, Barrister-at-Law and legal counsel for the community, spreading unverified information is harmful and undermines the long-standing diplomatic and economic partnership between Ghana and China.
The statement warned that individuals or groups disseminating falsehoods on platforms such as TikTok, newspapers, or online portals without scientific evidence or official findings from the black box risk legal consequences under Ghanaian law.
“Any individual or group that persists in spreading false information concerning the cause of the Z9 Chinese-made helicopter crash, without verified justification or official scientific findings, will be held accountable under the laws of Ghana,” the statement emphasized.
The community further noted that such conduct misleads the public, disrespects the memory of the victims, and threatens the strong cooperation between the two nations in areas including economic development and security.
The Chinese community expressed hope that this firm position will help curb the circulation of misinformation and encourage mutual respect between the peoples of Ghana and China.
