Vice Chancellor of the University of Health and Allied Sciences (UHAS), Professor Lydia Aziator, has urged women to pursue financial independence and position themselves as equal partners in society, warning against excessive reliance on their husbands.
Delivering the spotlight address at the maiden She Build Conference in Accra, organised by the Academic Woman Foundation, Prof. Aziator said women must take deliberate steps to create their own sources of income and contribute meaningfully to household and national development.
“A woman is supposed to be a partner to her husband, not a liability,” she stressed, adding that women must also cultivate confidence in both professional and personal life.
She cautioned, however, that empowerment should not be mistaken for arrogance or pride.
“The fact that you are there should not make you above anyone. If you become proud, you will not make it,” she advised, underscoring the importance of humility and respect.
The She Build Conference, held at the Accra International Conference Centre under the theme “Where women are, where are we going, and what we need to do,” brought together women leaders from academia, law, engineering, entrepreneurship, and media.
The platform highlighted the barriers women face in the workplace and proposed strategies to foster inclusivity and leadership opportunities.
The event also featured a keynote from the Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection, Hon. Dr. Agnes Naa Momo Lartey, who reaffirmed government’s commitment to women’s empowerment and amplifying their role in national development.
With thought-provoking contributions from speakers like Prof. Aziator, the conference underscored the need for women to break traditional limitations, embrace economic independence, and build confidence that inspires both family and society.
