Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection, Hon. Dr. Agness Naa Momo Lartey, has reaffirmed government’s commitment to making the Ghana School Feeding Programme both nutritious and impactful in boosting enrollment and retention in public schools.
During a spot check at the New Gbawe Cluster of Schools in the Ga South Municipality on Tuesday, September 16, 2025, Dr. Lartey encouraged school authorities and caterers to adopt innovative serving methods that enhance efficiency and hygiene.
Unlike her earlier visit to the Nungua Cluster of Schools, where pupils queued for meals, she observed that in Gbawe, caterers and teachers delivered food directly to classrooms.
She described the approach as orderly, hygienic, and an opportunity to instill proper etiquette in children.
“I noticed here in Gbawe, the children don’t queue for food. Meals are placed in baskets per class and served at their tables.
This not only prevents disorder but also instils table manners, which are lessons children should grow up with,” she said.
The Minister emphasized that the programme goes beyond providing meals, insisting that food must meet nutritional standards and be served in hygienic conditions.
She commended the National Coordinator of the programme, teachers, and the Ga South Municipal Assembly for their commitment.
She also assured that her Ministry, together with the School Feeding Secretariat, will continue conducting unannounced spot checks nationwide to uphold quality standards.
“Innovation, such as what we have seen here in Gbawe, supports the Reset Agenda. It is not only about feeding children but also about the quality of food and how it is served. We are determined to protect the value of this social protection intervention,” she added.
Her visit forms part of broader government efforts to improve efficiency, accountability, and impact within the School Feeding Programme, a flagship social protection initiative.
The Municipal Chief Executive (M.C.E) for Gbawe, Felix Odartey-Lamptey, commended the minister for the initiative.
“for the vision of every government to come to light, there is the need for monitoring and evaluation of which the minister is doing,” He said.
“This will also make the caterers and teachers to sit up and do better,” he added
