GRA launches investigation into alleged extortion by customs officers

The Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) has commenced investigations into allegations of extortion involving some officers of the Customs Division Task Force operating in the Ashanti Region.

The claims, made by the Traders Advocacy Group Ghana, concern purported payments demanded from importers whose intercepted containers were en route to Kumasi.

The officers are alleged to have cited undervaluation of goods and insisted on additional payments, which the affected importers described as unjustified.

In a statement, the GRA said it takes the allegations seriously and has launched an internal investigation to establish the facts.

“The probe will be thorough, and the public will be informed of the outcome once it is completed,” the statement added.

The Authority reiterated its commitment to upholding integrity, transparency, and accountability in all its operations and urged stakeholders and the public to report any suspected malpractices through established channels.
