Lands Minister commends IGP for support in galamsey fight

Lands and Natural Resources Minister Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah has commended Inspector General of Police (IGP) Christian Tetteh Yohuno and the Ghana Police Service for their significant contributions to the fight against illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey.

The Minister acknowledged the efforts of the Police administration in protecting Ghana’s natural resources and emphasized the importance of continued collaboration between law enforcement agencies and the Ministry to eradicate illegal mining activities.

In March 2025, IGP Yohuno declared an “all-out war” on illegal mining, directing regional commanders to intensify operations against galamsey.

He highlighted the severe environmental degradation and violence associated with illegal mining, including attacks on forest guards and civilians.

The IGP emphasized that such lawlessness must not continue and called for decisive action to bring perpetrators to justice.

Minister Buah’s commendation of the IGP aligns with the government’s broader strategy to combat illegal mining.

This strategy includes enforcing existing laws, restructuring monitoring teams, engaging traditional leaders and local authorities in licensing processes, deploying real-time technology to track mining activities, and raising public awareness to foster collective responsibility.

The collaborative efforts between the Ministry and the Ghana Police Service underscore the government’s commitment to preserving the environment and ensuring sustainable mining practices in Ghana.
