Mahama seeks stronger Ghana–CARICOM trade and economic ties

President John Dramani Mahama has reaffirmed Ghana’s commitment to deepening economic cooperation between Africa and the Caribbean through stronger trade, investment and commercial partnerships.

He said Ghana will use its one-year chairmanship of the African Union (AU) to advance stronger economic links between the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) and the Caribbean Community (CARICOM).

President Mahama made the announcement during a bilateral meeting with the Prime Minister of The Bahamas, Philip Davis, on the sidelines of the 2026 Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in Antigua and Barbuda.

He noted that connecting the two regional economic blocs would create a broader market, facilitate trade and investment, and unlock new opportunities for businesses across Africa and the Caribbean.

According to the President, strengthening the AfCFTA–CARICOM relationship will be one of Ghana’s priority areas during its AU chairmanship, as the country works to turn existing regional agreements into practical economic benefits.

Closer economic integration, he added, would not only boost commercial ties but also foster greater cooperation between the two regions and expand opportunities for sustainable growth.

The proposed partnership is expected to give African and Caribbean countries a platform to explore new markets, increase investment flows and build stronger economic relations grounded in their shared historical and cultural connections.

The initiative forms part of President Mahama’s broader efforts to strengthen South-South cooperation and position Africa as a more influential partner in global trade and economic diplomacy.
