Nigeria : Overnight attack leaves at least 30 dead in southern Kaduna

At least 30 people were killed when armed men attacked a village in Kaduna State, northern Nigeria, early on Monday, local residents said.

Security forces only arrived at the scene several hours later, according to villagers. Among the dead were eight children, while four other people were wounded.

No group has claimed responsibility for the assault.

Armed gangs have become a major security threat across much of northern Nigeria. In the northeast, the country continues to face a protracted insurgency by the Islamist militant group Boko Haram and its splinter factions.

Analysts say efforts to curb the violence have been hampered by corruption, weak intelligence sharing and chronically underfunded local policing.
