President Mahama orders arrest of illegal miners and GoldBod task force impersonators

President John Dramani Mahama has today ordered the immediate arrest and prosecution of individuals involved in illegal gold mining (galamsey) and those impersonating members of the GoldBod Task Force.

President Mahama has launched a forceful crackdown on illegal mining, describing galamsey as both environmental terrorism and economic sabotage.

He directed key ministers to ensure swift legal action against offenders, including those impersonating taskforce members.

A new multi-agency GoldBod Task Force has been inaugurated with arrest powers and mandated to operate transparently using body cameras and GPS-tracked vehicles.

Mahama warned that any abuse of power by the taskforce would lead to immediate dismissal and prosecution.

To encourage public involvement, a 10% whistleblower reward has been introduced for credible tips leading to the recovery of illegal gold or its cash equivalent.

The GoldBod Act (2025) now imposes stiff penalties, including up to GH₵2.4 million in fines or 10 years in prison for unlicensed gold trading, especially by foreigners.

Mahama stressed that the law will be enforced impartially, regardless of political or business connections.

The initiative aims to protect the environment, preserve state revenue, and restore credibility to mining enforcement.
