President John Dramani Mahama yesterday evening warmly welcomed Peter Cardinal Appiah Turkson back to Ghana ahead of the nation’s first-ever National Day of Prayer and Thanksgiving, scheduled for Tuesday, July 1.
The President expressed deep gratitude to Cardinal Turkson for accepting his invitation to preach the sermon at the inaugural interfaith service, which will feature both Christian and Muslim prayers.
In his response, Cardinal Turkson remarked:
“If the President of your country calls, you can’t say no,”
underscoring his commitment to supporting Ghana’s spiritual and democratic journey.
He emphasized the vital role of faith and governance in national development, urging stronger collaboration between the Church and the State in providing moral guidance and social support. Cardinal Turkson also highlighted a promising new initiative by the Catholic Church to leverage its global structures for sustainability, revealing that a pilot programme in Nigeria is already underway and will soon be extended to other parts of the world.
Having arrived in Accra earlier today, Cardinal Turkson thanked President Mahama for the honour of being invited to lead the service.
President Mahama has designated July 1 as Ghana’s National Day of Prayer and Thanksgiving, to be observed annually as a moment for national reflection, unity, and gratitude.
