Sports minister fires back at GFA over black stars budget row

Sports Minister Kofi Adams has escalated his standoff with the Ghana Football Association (GFA), accusing the football body of ducking accountability in the dispute over the Black Stars’ World Cup budget.

The clash comes after Adams revealed on Tuesday that his ministry had slashed the GFA’s original $2,053,240 request to $1,320,490, a cut of $732,750.

He said the move, in line with President John Mahama’s directive for transparency, proved government’s commitment to fiscal discipline while still funding the team’s essentials.

Hours later, the GFA issued a statement titled “GFA Statement on Black Stars”.

While avoiding details of the cuts, the FA styled itself as “custodian of Ghana football” and urged Ghanaians to rally behind the national team ahead of Thursday’s trip to Chad and Monday’s showdown with Mali.

It added that “comprehensive remarks” on the Ministry’s disclosures would come only after the Mali match.

That line sparked Adams’ fury.

“There’s nothing to respond to. We are waiting for their response, and we’ll come back with supporting documents.

But what is GFA communication? Why is the person afraid to put his name there? In such communication, you should put the person’s name so that we know who to respond to,” he shot back.

The dispute has injected political and administrative drama into Ghana’s World Cup qualifying campaign.

While the Black Stars chase points on the pitch, the Ministry and GFA are locked in a battle over money and credibility, a clash likely to intensify once the final whistle blows in Accra on September 8.
