US court slashes damages against Kennedy Agyapong in Anas defamation suit to $500

Tiger Eye PI, the investigative outfit led by journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas, has confirmed that the US$18 million defamation damages awarded against Assin Central MP Kennedy Agyapong in a U.S. court have been drastically reduced to just $500.

In a statement issued on May 11, 2025, Tiger Eye PI explained that the reduction followed a legal motion for remittitur filed by Mr. Agyapong.

The motion sought a downward adjustment of the jury’s initial award, arguing it was excessive.

The presiding judge granted the request, significantly reducing the award from the multi-million-dollar figure.

Tiger Eye PI acknowledged the court’s decision, saying,

“We are aware of the reduction and accept it as part of the judicial process.”

The organization did not indicate whether it would pursue further legal steps.

The original award stemmed from a defamation suit filed by Anas in a U.S. court in 2019, following allegations and derogatory statements made by Mr. Agyapong in the wake of the release of the Number12 exposé on football corruption.

The court had initially ruled in Anas’s favour in 2024, awarding US$18 million in damages for reputational harm.

The latest twist marks a dramatic turn in the high-profile legal battle between one of Ghana’s most prominent investigative journalists and one of its most outspoken politicians.
