We are coming after you soon – Greater Accra Min. warns traders on Kaneshie footbridge to vacate

The Greater Accra Regional Minister, Madam Linda Obenewa Ocloo, has sent a strong warning to the traders operating on the Kaneshie footbridge to vacate the deteriorating bridge before authorities evict them forcefully.

Speaking on Dwaboase on TV XYZ and Power FM, the Minister who is also the MP for Shai Osu Doku, lamented the debilitating nature of the footbridge but hastened that traders who sell on the bridge will be evicted before the government comes in to fix it.

Although she did not give a timeline for the said action but she said “soon,  we will come after the hawkers on the Kaneshie footbridge” in Akan as she expressed her commitment to sanitise the streets of Accra.

“We will also ensure we get beggars off our streets in Accra,” The MP stated.

The Kaneshie footbridge has been in a deplorable state for years yet hawkers find their ways onto it and display their item on the floor to sell to commuters who use the bridge. The activities of these hawkers leave the footbridge filthy always.

Recently, the traders were given until the end of April 2025 to vacate the area following a joint inspection exercise by the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA), the Ministry for Local Government, Chieftaincy, and Religious Affairs (MLGCRA), and the Ablekuma Central Municipal Assembly (ACMA).

According to officials, the inspection aimed to assess the condition of deteriorating footbridges in the metropolis, particularly at the Kaneshie Market, one of the busiest commercial hubs in the capital.

Speaking after the inspection, the Coordinating Director at AMA, Douglas N.K. Annoful expressed concern over the structural integrity of the bridge, stressing that the presence of hawkers on the footbridge was contributing significantly to the weakening of the structure.

He explained that although efforts had been made by the AMA to relocate the traders, there had been little compliance.
