The Minister for Communication, Digital Technology, and Innovation, Sam Nartey George, has assured Ghanaians that the upcoming SIM card registration exercise will be a seamless, human-centered, and technology-driven process.

Speaking at the press briefing on Wednesday April 9, Sam George emphasised the government’s commitment to addressing the shortcomings of the previous administration’s SIM re-registration exercise.

“This is a human-centered, technology-driven exercise” he stated, It will happen so seamlessly and without stress that most Ghanaians will ask themselves why they were saddled with eight years of misrule and mismanagement.

These measures were expected to contribute to a safer and more organised telecommunications landscape in Ghana.

Despite efforts from the previous government key aim in implementing the re-registration to strengthen national security by reducing criminal activities facilitated by unregistered SIM cards failed.

NPP general secretary accuses state of intimidation over Ntim Fordjour arrest attempt

Justin Kodua Frimpong, the General Secretary of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), has accused operatives from the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) of attempting to arrest Rev. John Ntim Fordjour, the Member of Parliament for Assin South, on Wednesday, April 9, 2025.

In a social media post, Frimpong condemned the incident, using the hashtag “#SayNoToStateIntimidation,” alleging that the action was politically motivated.

A video circulating on social media showed several armed men, wearing bulletproof vests with NIB insignia, reportedly standing outside Rev. Ntim Fordjour’s residence.

Fordjour, who serves as a prominent member of Parliament’s Security and Defence Committee, has recently been embroiled in controversy over his allegations involving two suspicious flights connected to drug trafficking and money laundering activities.

The flights, which landed at Kotoka International Airport, have attracted significant attention after Fordjour claimed they were involved in illicit operations.

Rev. Fordjour had previously linked two foreign aircraft—AirMed Flight N823AM and Cavok Air Antonov An-12B—to suspected cocaine trafficking in Ghana.

These claims have sparked both national and international investigations, though they have also generated political tension and scrutiny.

The NIB operation has fueled further debates, with accusations that the move is politically charged, complicating the discourse surrounding the state’s handling of allegations of criminal activity.

The suspects, including two Ghanaians and three Chinese nationals, were taken into custody during a police operation.

The arrested individuals have been identified as Duut Kwabena Sakakba (38), Douglas Nyamekye (36), Ma Jian (37), Ma Young (31), and Ma Haibi (54).

Two excavators were found operating at the mining site, though the operators fled before police could seize them.

The excavators, identified by their chassis numbers, are currently being moved to a secure location while authorities work to trace their owners.

In addition, a Toyota Hilux pickup was discovered at the scene and has been impounded.

This operation is part of the ongoing nationwide crackdown on illegal mining activities that threaten Ghana’s natural resources.

Government to end contract with Kelni GVG after telecom monitoring deal expires

The Ministry of Communications and Digital Technology has announced it will terminate its contract with Kelni GVG, the firm overseeing Ghana’s telecom revenue monitoring, once the current agreement expires.

At a press briefing in Accra today, Wednesday, April 9, Communications Minister Samuel Nartey George said the contract’s rising cost burden has made it financially unsustainable.

“We are spending more on monitoring revenues than we are retaining. This is unacceptable,” Mr. George said.

Kelni GVG has managed the Common Monitoring Platform (CMP) since 2018 to track inbound international calls and reduce telecom revenue leakages.

However, Mr. George revealed that the cost of the contract has surged from 28% of monitored revenue at inception to 84% as of October 2024.

“This contract has become unsustainable for the state,” he added.

The National Communications Authority (NCA) will assume all monitoring responsibilities moving forward.

Mr. George said the NCA has been directed to prepare for a smooth handover, including conducting an operational audit of Kelni GVG’s system.

“We’re committed to a seamless transition and better value for public funds,” he noted.

The $89 million deal with Kelni GVG has drawn some controversial criticism for years now.

Some of the criticized concerns are, IMANI Africa challenged its cost-effectiveness and transparency, Parliament raised concerns about the procurement process and telecom operators cited operational inefficiencies.

Mr. George pledged stricter accountability under the NCA, saying future telecom monitoring will emphasize transparency, efficiency, and value for money.

“Every cedi must work harder for the people of Ghana,” he concluded.

Sam George unveils bold telecom reforms, warns operators over poor service

Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations, Sam George, has rolled out a series of bold regulatory interventions to tackle Ghana’s worsening telecommunications services—warning network operators that poor performance will no longer be tolerated.

Speaking at a press briefing on Wednesday, April 9, 2025, the Minister acknowledged the surge in public complaints about dropped calls, slow internet, and unreliable coverage, declaring that the era of leniency is over.

“I have noted several complaints about the quality of service of almost all the network providers in the country,” he said. “The government will not allow this to continue,” he said.

The government, through the National Communications Authority (NCA), has approved major measures to boost service delivery which are technology neutrality for MTN Ghana, allowing the company to use its existing spectrum more efficiently to improve coverage and speed and additional spectrum allocations for both MTN and Telecel Ghana, providing more bandwidth to support better performance.

“This will give operators more capacity to enhance their services and address the quality issues subscribers are facing,” Mr. George explained.

In a decisive shift, Mr. George announced a three-month deadline for telecom providers to show measurable improvements—or face sanctions.

“The NCA will begin rigorous enforcement of quality standards three months after the spectrum assignments. Failure to comply will attract stiff fines,” he warned.

The move represents one of the Minister’s first major initiatives since taking office and signals a firmer regulatory approach.

It is expected to bring relief to millions of Ghanaians plagued by persistent connectivity issues.

With the new reforms, consumers could soon see improved call reliability, faster data speeds, and more consistent network performance.

High Court acquits Assin North MP James Gyakye Quayson in dual citizenship case

The High Court has acquitted and discharged Assin North MP James Gyakye Quayson, ending a long-running criminal trial over allegations that he contested the 2020 parliamentary elections while holding dual citizenship.

The ruling, which was delivered today Wednesday, April 9, 2025, dismissed all five charges against Quayson, including forgery, perjury, and false declaration for office.

Prosecutors had argued that Quayson breached the Constitution by filing to contest the 2020 elections while still holding Canadian citizenship.

However, the court ruled that the prosecution failed to prove its case, following a submission of “no case to answer” by the defence.

The judge found that Quayson had begun the process of renouncing his Canadian citizenship before filing his nomination, and thus did not act dishonestly or make any false declarations.

The court also noted inconsistencies in prosecution evidence, including discrepancies in passport summaries and statutory declarations, which further undermined the charges.

Quayson, who has consistently denied wrongdoing, expressed relief at the outcome, which clears the way for him to continue his parliamentary duties without legal obstruction.
