President Mahama addresses Zambian Parliament, calls for an end to economic emancipation

President John Dramani Mahama has called for an end to economic emancipation on the African continent. According to him, African leaders must confront the battle to transform their economies.

Addressing the Zambian Parliament on Thursday, February 5, 2026, as part of his 3-day state visit to Zambia, President Mahama recounted the struggles of the nation’s founders for independence and the urgent need for current leaders to seek the prosperity of their citizens.

“The responsibility of our generation is clear: to translate historic solidarity and political goodwill into concrete economic and social dividends for our peoples. Our forebears won us independence and nationhood. Now we must win the fight for economic transformation and prosperity for our people,” President Mahama emphasized.

President Mahama stressed that, at a time when global humanitarian assistance is shrinking and traditional multilateral systems are under strain, Africa must rethink its development.

“We must confront the battle for the economic emancipation of our countries at a time when global geopolitics is undergoing tectonic shifts. Today, global humanitarian assistance is shrinking. Official development assistance is declining, defense spending is rising, and traditional multilateral systems are under strain,” he said.

He added, “Africa, therefore, faces a different pandemic, the pandemic of unfulfilled potential. Millions of young people remain unemployed; health systems are fragile; and economies extract wealth without building capacity,” President Mahama stated.

GTA engages restaurant operators over service charges and rising costs

The Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA) has engaged restaurant, fast-food, and food joint operators at a high-level stakeholder meeting aimed at addressing operational and regulatory challenges within the hospitality industry.

The engagement, held at the Accra City Hotel, is part of the Authority’s ongoing efforts to strengthen collaboration with key industry players to promote growth, competitiveness, and sustainability in Ghana’s tourism and hospitality sector.

Key among the issues discussed was the growing public concern over the imposition of mandatory service charges on customers’ bills.

The practice, which has become increasingly common, was identified as having the potential to undermine consumer confidence and damage the image of the hospitality industry.

The meeting also served as a platform for open dialogue, experience-sharing, and the development of practical recommendations to guide industry best practices in line with international standards and consumer protection principles.

Management of the Ghana Tourism Authority and industry operators deliberated on measures to ensure fairness, transparency, and improved service delivery across the sector.

Speaking to journalists on the sidelines, the Deputy Chief Executive Officer in charge of Operations and Services at the GTA, Ekow Sampson, expressed concern about the rising cost of services charged by some food vendors and restaurant operators.

According to him, aside from approved levies, the Authority has observed that some operators have imposed additional charges ranging from 10 to 20 percent on customers’ bills.

Mr. Sampson said the GTA has since engaged with such operators to discourage the introduction of unauthorized charges, stressing that fair pricing remains critical to protecting consumers and sustaining growth in the tourism and hospitality industry.

He noted that quality service delivery, combined with affordable pricing, would encourage patronage and strengthen the sector.

Meanwhile, a restaurant operator, Madam Lilian Agbaga, expressed concern over what she described as overlapping levies paid during the 2025 financial year.

She said the multiple charges have placed significant financial strain on her business and affected its day-to-day operations. She called on the Ghana Tourism Authority to intervene and help reduce the burden of levies imposed on restaurant operators.

Minister for Gender Leads Ghana’s Delegation to Brazil for 2nd Global Summit on School Meals

The Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection, Hon. Dr Agnes Naa Momo Lartey, has led Ghana’s delegation to the 2nd Global Summit on the School Meals Coalition in Brazil, where she showcased Ghana’s achievements in providing hot and nutritious meals to schoolchildren.

Speaking at the summit, Dr Lartey emphasised that the Ghana School Feeding Programme (GSFP) is not only about feeding children but also about transforming lives and strengthening communities. She outlined four core objectives of the programme:

Tackling malnutrition and boosting the immunity and well-being of children to reduce diseases and support healthy growth.

Improving school enrolment, attendance, and retention, particularly in public basic schools.

Promoting local agriculture by sourcing food from Ghanaian farmers to create a sustainable market for local produce.

Creating jobs for caterers and cooks, especially women, thereby empowering households and communities.

The Minister revealed that the GSFP currently provides meals to more than 4.2 million children in over 12,000 basic schools nationwide, a milestone that reflects Ghana’s commitment to child welfare and education.

Dr Lartey also participated as a panellist, where she shared how research has directly influenced the establishment and evolution of the programme. She commended Prof. Donald Bundy for his role in the initial research that informed Ghana’s policy decisions, resulting in significant investments in school feeding and other social interventions.

Looking ahead, she outlined the government’s plans to strengthen further the programme through enhanced nutritional standards, closer monitoring of food quality, and expanded partnerships with local producers.

On the sidelines of the summit, Dr Lartey and her delegation also held bilateral meetings with counterparts from Finland and Ethiopia, exploring opportunities for collaboration in strengthening school meal initiatives and advancing shared goals in social protection.

The Global Summit on the School Meals Coalition brought together policymakers, researchers, and stakeholders from across the world to explore strategies that leverage school meals as a tool for improving education, health, and economic development.

Adu-Boahene trial: deputy A-G dismisses claims of missing evidence

Deputy Attorney-General Dr. Justice Srem-Sai has dismissed reports that evidence in the ongoing Republic v. Adu-Boahene trial has gone missing, insisting that the prosecution’s case remains fully intact.

In a statement on social media, Dr. Srem-Sai described the claims as “unfounded,” stressing that all materials required for the trial were properly filed months ago and remain available to both the court and the accused persons.

“The Attorney-General’s office has not lost any evidence regarding the ongoing Republic v. Adu-Boahene criminal trial,” he said.

He stated that by June 18, the prosecution had already submitted all evidence it intends to rely on, including contracts of sale, bank transfer records, account statements, company registration and property documents, receipts, INTERPOL stolen vehicle records, investigative caution and charge statements, records of asset non-declaration, a money-flow chart tracing transactions across multiple bank accounts, and testimonies from three prosecution witnesses.

He stressed that certified copies of these documents were lodged with the court and duly served on all accused persons, making it “unrealistic” for the trial to be jeopardised by alleged missing files.

Updating the public on proceedings before the July legal vacation, Dr. Srem-Sai noted that the first prosecution witness had completed testimony and had been cross-examined by three of the four defence teams.

The high-profile trial, which has drawn significant public interest, is scheduled to resume in mid-October when courts reopen after the legal break.
