Bawku Naaba praises IGP for commitment to peace and Justice

In a rare and significant public gesture, the Kusaug Traditional Council, led by the revered Bawku Naba, Zug-Raan Asigri Abugrago Azoka II, has lauded the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Christian Tetteh Yohuno, for his principled response to recent unrest in Bawku.

The council expressed “sincere appreciation” for the IGP’s visit to the conflict-prone area, hailing his commitment to transparency, justice, and lasting peace.

The Bawku Naaba’s commendation follows Mr Yohuno’s tour of the Upper East town, where he met with local leaders and pledged a full investigation into the circumstances that led to the death of one individual and injuries to several others in a recent disturbance. His visit, which many have described as a significant gesture of state engagement, is being seen by local leaders as a reaffirmation of the police service’s resolve to restore order and rebuild trust.

In a statement signed by the Council’s Secretary, Mr. David Adoliba, the traditional authority acknowledged the symbolic and practical importance of the IGP’s presence. “This gesture demonstrates the IGP’s dedication to transparency and accountability, aligning with the council’s values of preserving community identity and promoting development,” the statement noted.

The Kusaug Traditional Council used the opportunity to reinforce its unwavering call for peace in the region. “We urge the youth to remain calm, avoid destructive actions, and trust the justice system,” the statement said. The Bawku Naaba, known for his consistent calls for dialogue and reconciliation, reiterated the need for constructive engagement to resolve the longstanding tensions that have marred the area’s development. The council emphasized that achieving lasting peace in Bawku requires a collective effort. “Let us work together towards peaceful advocacy and meaningful dialogue to address concerns and achieve accountability,” the statement urged, echoing the IGP’s own remarks during his visit.

In a further show of support for state institutions, the Kusaug Traditional Council appealed to the IGP to ensure that police officers resume their regular duties in the municipality, signalling the council’s readiness to support operational security measures. “With this trust, we call on the Inspector-General of Police to direct the Divisional Command to deploy police personnel to resume their normal duties in Kusaug,” the council said.

This statement is a notable pivot toward collaboration following years of mutual suspicion between some communities and state security actors in the area. By calling for the full restoration of police operations, the Bawku Naaba signalled both confidence in the current leadership of the Ghana Police Service and the community’s desire to return to normalcy.

The statement concluded with a powerful endorsement of the IGP’s message of inclusive peacebuilding. “We call on all parties to prioritize peace and unity, echoing the Inspector General of Police’s vision on collective action and dialogue,” it read. “By working together and engaging in constructive discussions, we can effectively resolve the conflict and restore stability in Kusaug.”

As Ghana’s northern conflict hotspots continue to pose challenges to national cohesion and development, the alliance between traditional authority and security leadership in Bawku offers a potential blueprint for peacebuilding elsewhere. The Bawku Naaba’s endorsement of IGP Yohuno may well mark a turning point—if matched with continued dialogue, transparency, and action.

Eastern Regional cocoa farmers trained on organic fertilizer that boosts yields

A group of cocoa farmers in Ghana’s Eastern Region are seeing real promise in a new organic fertiliser that’s helping boost yields by as much as 70 percent.

The product, known locally as Asaasehene and officially called Polysulphate, was the focus of a hands-on training held this week for 32 farmers from across 11 cocoa districts, including Suhum, Tafo, Nkawkaw, and Akim Oda.

The fertilizer has been tested and approved by the Cocoa Research Institute of Ghana (CRIG) and is already generating buzz among farmers for how quickly it improves pod growth and soil health.

At the training, William Hunt, Country Manager of Demeter Ghana, the company behind the fertilizer, explained why this matters.

“It’s not just about bigger harvests,” he said. “This is about helping farmers grow more using eco-friendly methods that protect their land and livelihoods for the long term.”

Hunt added that Demeter has been working with farmers across Ghana since last year, offering support services to help address some of the biggest challenges cocoa growers face today.

The project is being carried out in partnership with the Cocoa Health and Extension Division (CHED) of COCOBOD, which sees this as part of a bigger push toward sustainable cocoa farming.

“The difference on the farms is clear,” said Abdul Majeed Mumuni, Acting Deputy Executive Director of CHED.

“This fertilizer releases nutrients gradually, supports flower and pod growth, and helps farmers stay productive without compromising their land.”

The science backs it up. Alfred Arthur, a senior researcher at Bunso Cocoa College, confirmed that CRIG tested the fertilizer thoroughly back in 2019, running trials on farms in Bechem, Konongo, and Assin Nkokoasa.

“We’ve seen no negative effects on the cocoa trees,” he said. “The data shows clear productivity gains.”

For cocoa farmer Solomon Boadi from Akim Oda, the results speak for themselves.

“After using just six bags, I saw a big jump in cocoa pods in a matter of weeks,” he said. “Other farmers started asking me what I was using didn’t hesitate to tell them.”

With a product that delivers on both productivity and sustainability, farmers and experts alike are hopeful that this marks a turning point one where smart farming, innovation, and partnership drive the future of cocoa in Ghana.

Education Minister calls for fresh thinking in teacher training

At Somanya in the Eastern Region, Ghana’s Education Minister, Haruna Iddrisu, is urging teacher training colleges to embrace innovation, technology, and partnerships to better prepare educators for the evolving needs of today’s classrooms.

Speaking through Prof. Mahama Dawiejua at the 75th anniversary celebration of Mount Mary College of Education (MOMACOE) in Somanya, the Minister said colleges must move beyond traditional methods and build systems that truly support the modern teacher.

“We can no longer train teachers the way we did decades ago,” the Minister noted. “We must create an environment where educators keep learning, stay current with the times, and use technology not just occasionally, but as a core part of their teaching.”

He also called for stronger collaboration between colleges of education, the Ministry of Education, and bodies like the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) to ensure consistent support for teacher development.

Mr. Iddrisu emphasized that as society changes, so must the way teachers are trained.

He encouraged institutions to regularly review their curricula, teaching styles, and learning tools—especially to support schools in rural or underserved areas.

Guest speaker Rev. Fr Dr. Michael Kodzo Mensah, a Senior Lecturer at the University of Ghana, acknowledged challenges facing Catholic teacher education, but said they also offer a chance to innovate.

“Let’s not be discouraged by the hurdles,” he said. “With creative training programs and support from universities, we can strengthen both academic excellence and our Catholic identity.”

Principal Dr. Cecilia Esinam Agbeh shared that MOMACOE now has 1,456 students (580 males and 876 females), supported by 54 teaching staff and 93 non-teaching staff.

While proud of the college’s achievements, she raised concerns about inadequate infrastructure and appealed for help from alumni and partners.

The President of the MOMACOE Alumni Association, Joseph Saki Venyor, echoed the call, encouraging former students to give back and help the college continue its mission.

Student leader Maxwell Amuzu Foli, President of the SRC, pledged the students’ commitment to upholding MOMACOE’s values of excellence, integrity, and service.

Wrapping up the event, Most Rev. Fr. Joseph Afrifa Agyekum, Catholic Bishop of Koforidua and chairman of the occasion, appealed to the local community to resolve land disputes involving the college.

He said peace was essential to allow much-needed infrastructure development to move forward.

The celebration, themed “Celebrating 75 Years of Teacher Education with Catholic Values: Impact, Challenges and Prospects”, reflected on MOMACOE’s legacy and its commitment to shaping the next generation of educators for Ghana.

IMF, Ghana seal staff-level deal to unlock $370M in next loan disbursement

Ghana has cleared another key hurdle in its $3 billion bailout program with the International Monetary Fund (IMF), after reaching a staff-level agreement on the fourth review of the deal.

If approved by the IMF’s Executive Board in the coming weeks, the agreement will unlock a fresh disbursement of $370 million, bringing Ghana’s total receipts so far to about $2.36 billion since the program began in May 2023.

According to the IMF, Ghana’s economy showed encouraging signs of recovery in 2024 — with growth outpacing expectations, thanks largely to gains in the mining and construction sectors.

The country’s external position also improved, supported by strong gold exports and a steady flow of remittances. Ghana’s international reserves have risen, even beating some program targets.

But it wasn’t all good news. The IMF pointed to “fiscal slippages” in the lead-up to the 2024 elections, which saw the government rack up large unpaid bills.

Inflation also rose beyond the program’s targets, and progress stalled on several structural reforms, especially in the energy, financial, and public sectors.

“Preliminary data show significant payables built up before the elections,” said IMF Mission Chief Stéphane Roudet, who led the Fund’s two-week review mission in Accra.

Since coming into office in early 2025, Ghana’s new administration has taken steps to get the program back on track.

That includes an audit of outstanding payables and a disciplined 2025 budget that aims for a 1.5% primary surplus (excluding interest payments).

The IMF welcomed these early moves, particularly efforts to tighten spending controls, strengthen public financial management, and reset key fiscal rules.

Authorities are also focusing on improving how public money is spent — especially in procurement, governance, and social safety nets to protect the most vulnerable.

The Bank of Ghana has also stepped up its game, raising interest rates and tightening liquidity to help fight inflation.

These actions, paired with the government’s fiscal tightening, are meant to stabilize the economy and rebuild market confidence after a turbulent 2024.

The government has recommitted to reforming State-Owned Enterprises (SOEs) with an eye on improving performance and cutting down arrears. Particular focus is on the energy, gold, and cocoa sectors.

One key move is restarting quarterly electricity tariff adjustments to prevent further debt build-up in the energy sector.

Ghana is also working to shore up its financial sector, with efforts to recapitalize banks and improve the efficiency of public lenders.

On the debt front, Ghana has made “important strides,” according to the IMF.

A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) has now been signed with all official creditors under the G20 Common Framework, and attention is shifting to finalizing bilateral agreements.

Talks with commercial creditors are still underway.

The IMF urged all parties to stay aligned with program goals and ensure fair treatment for all lenders.

The staff-level agreement now heads to the IMF Executive Board for formal approval. Once cleared, the disbursement of $370 million will follow — helping Ghana continue its efforts to stabilize the economy, manage debt, and drive inclusive growth.

The IMF wrapped up its statement by praising Ghana’s authorities for their “strong collaboration,” and expressed continued support for the country’s recovery agenda.

GoldBod becomes sole regulator of Ghana’s gold trade

The general public has been officially informed that, under the newly passed Ghana Gold Board Act (Act 1140), all licenses previously issued by the Precious Minerals Marketing Company (PMMC) or the Minister responsible for Mines to individuals or companies other than large-scale mining entities have ceased to be valid.

The Act, passed by Parliament on 29th March 2025 and assented to by the President on 2nd April 2025, mandates that the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod) is now the sole authority in charge of buying, selling, assaying, and exporting gold from Ghana’s Artisanal and Small-Scale Mining (ASM) sector.

Effective immediately, only GoldBod or its licensed buyers, aggregators, or service providers are permitted to trade or export ASM gold within and outside the country. All other entities previously operating under PMMC or ministerial licenses are to halt their activities.

However, to ensure a smooth transition and protect existing contractual agreements, GoldBod has announced a grace period.

Licensed buyers may continue gold purchases and exports under old licenses until 30th April 2025.

During this period, all gold transactions must be conducted in Ghana cedis, within pricing based on the Bank of Ghana Reference Rate available at www.bog.gov.gh.

Beginning 22nd April 2025, Ghanaians and fully Ghanaian-owned companies whose licenses have expired—or individuals seeking to enter the gold trade—are advised to apply for new licenses under the GoldBod framework.

Applications can be submitted online (via the official GoldBod website, which will go live on the same day) or in person at the GoldBod Licensing and Regulations office at its headquarters in Accra.

The statement, signed by Prince Kwame Minkah, Media Relations Officer of GoldBod, further instructs all foreign nationals involved in local gold trading to exit the market no later than 30th April 2025.

Foreigners interested in participating in the gold trade may apply to purchase gold directly from GoldBod.

It was emphasized that, effective 1st May 2025, dealing in gold without a valid GoldBod-issued license will constitute a punishable offence under Ghanaian law.

This development marks a significant policy shift aimed at centralizing and regulating Ghana’s gold trade, particularly within the ASM sector, to ensure transparency, compliance, and improved revenue mobilization.
