Improving quality education: Biakoye Mp honours teachers with awards to boost educational standards

In a bid to enhance teaching and learning in the Biakoye District, the Member of Parliament, Hon. Jean-Marie Formadi (Lady JM), has launched a Teachers’ Excellence Awards initiative to honour educators who have made outstanding contributions to quality education in the area.

The awards, which include freezers, 32-inch televisions, and washing machines, are designed to motivate teachers, many of whom work under challenging conditions in remote communities with limited access to water, electricity, and mobile network connectivity.

Speaking to XYZ News and Ibrahim Nsor, Hon. Formadi said the initiative was inspired by President John Dramani Mahama’s vision to improve educational quality nationwide.

She noted that the Biakoye District suffered developmental setbacks during the eight years under the previous NPP administration, including stalled school infrastructure, water projects, and electrification efforts.

To address these gaps, she revealed that new classroom blocks and clinics are currently under construction to accelerate development and support quality learning.

The District Chief Executive for Biakoye, Hon. Eric Kwaku Opong, echoed these concerns, stating that the lack of new classroom infrastructure in previous years left many pupils learning in deplorable conditions.

He added that under his first term in office, and in collaboration with the MP, a 3-unit classroom block for both primary and JHS levels has been initiated to improve teaching and learning.

The Biakoye District Director of Education, Mr. David Kwame Seddoh, commended the MP for the awards scheme, describing it as a timely intervention to motivate teachers.

He praised all educators in the district, whether awarded or not, calling them the true heroes of Biakoye’s educational progress.

Dr. Oppong-Fosu warns of rising ‘transactional culture’ undermining Ghana’s governance

Former Member of Parliament for Amenfi East and Board Chairman of the Ghana Investment Promotion Centre (GIPC), Dr. Akwasi Oppong-Fosu, has cautioned that Ghana is witnessing a dangerous rise in what he terms a “transactional culture,” a trend he says is corroding national values, weakening accountability, and entrenching corruption.

Addressing the handing-over ceremony of the Volta Region Students Association of Ghana (VORSAG) at the Ghana Communication Technology University (GCTU) on Wednesday, November 26, Dr. Oppong-Fosu said Ghana is increasingly becoming a society where personal gain overrides national interest, and where political leaders prioritize short-term advantage over long-term development.

“We are becoming a society where the pursuit of power is valued more than service, where opportunism is celebrated, and integrity is punished,” he stated.

He argued that this shift has transformed leadership into a marketplace transaction rather than a call to service.

“Leadership positions are negotiated in the marketplace. Influence is negotiated, loyalty is traded, and political success is increasingly determined by money rather than merit,” he noted.

According to Dr. Oppong-Fosu, the effects of this culture are evident in the monetisation of politics, declining accountability, and the increasing normalization of corruption.

He observed that the public has become desensitized to large-scale financial mismanagement.

“You are no longer surprised when you hear millions of dollars have been looted or squandered. Recently, an issue came up involving about $10 million, and someone asked, ‘Is that all?’ because we are now accustomed to hearing amounts running into billions of cedis,” he said.

He lamented that funds meant for infrastructure, job creation and national development are instead diverted into private pockets due to the transactional nature of Ghana’s political system.

Dr. Oppong-Fosu urged students and the youth to resist the normalization of corruption and to champion integrity, meritocracy and service-oriented leadership as the foundation for Ghana’s progress.

No country develops on division: Dr. Akwasi Oppong-Fosu warns of rising polarization

The Former Member of Parliament for Amenfi East and Board Chairman of the Ghana Investment Promotion Centre (GIPC), Dr. Akwasi Oppong-Fosu, has warned that Ghana is drifting toward dangerous levels of national division driven by extreme partisanship, ethnic polarization and the politicization of religion.

Speaking at the handing-over ceremony of the Volta Region Students Association of Ghana (VORSAG) at the Ghana Communication Technology University (GCTU) in Accra on Wednesday, November 26, Dr. Oppong-Fosu said the nation is at a crossroads where it must choose whether to move forward confidently or sink deeper into uncertainty.

He lamented that Ghana is “becoming a nation more divided than at any other moment in our history,” noting that political participation has taken on an increasingly extreme partisan character, while ethnicity is being weaponized for political gain.

According to him, some ethnic groups face undue challenges depending on which government is in power, a situation he described as unhealthy for national cohesion.

“Instead of national identity binding us together, we are witnessing the emergence of fragmented identities pulling us apart. Religion, once a unifying moral force, is now being dragged into political competition. We discuss who deserves to be at the Jubilee House based on religion and ethnicity, not merit, competence or character,” he said.

Dr. Oppong-Fosu described these developments as “deeply disturbing,” warning that no country has achieved meaningful development by deepening internal divisions.

He stressed that tribal sentiment should never override personal values and that political intolerance must not replace constructive national debate.

He also expressed concern over the growing deterioration of intellectual discourse in the public space.

Citing a recent confrontation between two professors on live television, he observed that public debates have shifted from educating the public to promoting aggression.

“Years ago, we had programmes such as Talking Point where people waited anxiously to learn. Today, people clap for who punches harder. It is no longer about information, it is about attacks,” he said.

Dr. Oppong-Fosu further pointed to the rise of misinformation and fake news as a major threat to national stability, explaining that individuals are often maligned and discredited before they even have the opportunity to respond.

“When this happens, a country loses the glue that holds it together. If these trends continue unchecked, it will be the next generation, your generation, that pays the highest price,” he warned.

He urged students and young people to champion unity, responsible citizenship and informed dialogue, stressing that their active involvement is crucial to safeguarding Ghana’s democratic future.

COPEC urges Ghana Gas to take urgent steps to reduce domestic LPG costs

The Chamber of Petroleum Consumers (COPEC) has called on the Ghana National Gas Company to take decisive measures to lower the cost of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), making clean cooking energy more affordable and accessible to households nationwide.

Speaking on behalf of civil society organisations (CSOs) in the oil and gas sector, COPEC Executive Director Duncan Amoah emphasized that reducing LPG prices is critical to enabling more families to transition from charcoal to safer and cleaner cooking alternatives.

His remarks came on the sidelines of a stakeholder engagement organised by Ghana Gas, which brought together industry players, policymakers, and advocacy groups to discuss the opportunities and challenges facing the gas sector.

“Ghana Gas has an obligation to all Ghanaians to drive down the cost of LPG so that every home can switch from charcoal to LPG,” Mr. Amoah said.

He noted that while the company plays a strategic role in the national clean energy agenda, more concrete interventions are needed to achieve widespread LPG adoption, particularly among low-income households.

Mr. Amoah further highlighted the dual nature of gas as both a valuable national resource and a potentially dangerous commodity, stressing the need for effective government oversight to prevent operational risks and past sectoral challenges.

He also advocated for the establishment of a well-resourced and clearly mandated agency to oversee gas transmission infrastructure and operations, ensuring efficient coordination without duplication of roles.

In response, Ghana Gas CEO Madam Judith Adjobah Blay commended stakeholders for their active participation, describing the meeting as timely and constructive.

She reaffirmed the company’s commitment to addressing operational challenges and enhancing transparency, reliability, and resilience across the national gas supply chain.

Her remarks signalled a renewed effort by Ghana Gas to collaborate with stakeholders and refine strategies aimed at ensuring efficient and secure gas delivery nationwide.

President Mahama launches vegetable development project to boost local production and cut imports

President John Dramani Mahama has launched the Vegetable Development Project, locally known as YERIDIA, describing it as a strategic intervention aimed at transforming Ghana into a competitive, technology-driven vegetable producer and significantly reducing the country’s dependence on imports.

Speaking at the launch in Kukum, the President said the initiative forms a core part of the government’s Feed Ghana Programme, designed to address decades of low domestic vegetable production, especially during the dry season.

“For many years, our inability to produce adequate volumes of vegetables has forced us to rely heavily on imports, exposing our economy to unstable supply chains and foreign exchange pressures,” President Mahama said. “The Vegetable Development Project directly tackles this weakness and repositions Ghana as a net producer.”

At the heart of the project is the installation of solar-powered irrigation systems covering 60 hectares across six communities, Kukum, Nobeko, Dantano, Sankori, Asibrim, and Kwapon.

The President stressed that irrigation remains the foundation of sustainable vegetable production.

“These installations will provide reliable water supply, lower energy costs, reduce carbon emissions, and ensure climate resilience,” he noted.

Farmers have already begun receiving improved seeds, organic fertilizer, agronomic training, and digital advisory services.

A committed off-taker, FarmMeats, has been introduced to guarantee predictable markets for farmers’ produce.

A modern packhouse will also be constructed to manage grading, sorting, packaging, and cold-chain logistics.

The entire project is expected to be completed within 12 months.

President Mahama emphasized that YERIDIA is integrated into the broader Feed Ghana 2025–2028 Agricultural Transformation Agenda, which seeks to scale up production of strategic commodities, including rice, maize, soya bean, cassava, vegetables, poultry, and cashew.

Under the programme, the government is setting up Farmer Service Centres to provide mechanisation, inputs, and extension services, expanding irrigation systems, building commodity-based cooperatives for smallholders, supporting women and youth with targeted livelihood initiatives, and improving storage, agro-processing, value addition, and market access.

“These efforts lay the foundation for a 24-hour agricultural economy, powered by technology, reliable markets, and continuous production cycles,” he said.

The President highlighted the vegetable sector as one of agriculture’s highest-return areas, with short cropping cycles and strong income-generating potential.

In the Ahafo Region, the new irrigation systems are expected to expand dry-season farming, strengthen cooperatives, boost nationwide market supply, and create employment opportunities, particularly for young people and women.

President Mahama expressed appreciation to farmers, the Ministry of Food and Agriculture, development partners, and private sector collaborators, including FarmMate, for their contribution to the project’s success.

“The launch of the Vegetable Development Project marks another significant step in our reset agenda,” the President declared. “With discipline, unity, and a shared sense of purpose, we will feed Ghana, we will grow Ghana, and we will transform Ghana.”

He then officially launched the YERIDIA Vegetable Development Project.

Goldboard jewelry announces local gold value-addition drive, launches e-commerce platform

Goldboard Jewelry Limited has announced an ambitious new initiative to transform Ghana’s gold sector by shifting from raw mineral exports to high-value, locally crafted jewelry and investment-grade gold products.

The initiative, spearheaded by the Managing Director, Gertrude Emefa Donkor, places Ghanaian artisans and digital innovation at the center of what she describes as a new “gold value revolution.”

Speaking at the launch event, Ms. Donkor said the company’s mission is to retain more value from Ghana’s gold within the local economy while positioning the country as a global hub for jewelry and investment-grade gold.

“We are moving from exporting raw gold to exporting finished excellence,” she said. “Our artisans can match global standards. Every piece we craft here is not just jewelry, it is Ghanaian skill, creativity, and pride.”

Goldboard Jewelry has introduced a wide range of locally made rings, necklaces, bracelets, and specialty investment products known as the Goldboard Tablet, available in 1g, 5g, 10g, and 1oz 24-karat bullion formats.

Ms. Donkor explained that the tablets are designed for investment, gifting, and savings, with a guaranteed buyback option to build public trust and encourage long-term wealth creation.

The company also launched a 24/7 e-commerce platform to expand global access to Ghana-made gold products.

The platform allows customers to browse collections, track live gold prices, and make purchases via mobile money, bank cards, and other secure payment options.

Customers may pick up orders at seven designated showrooms, five in Accra and two in Kumasi.

According to Ms. Donkor, the digital expansion is a strategic move to make Ghana a competitive player in the global precious metals market.

She emphasized that local value addition keeps foreign exchange within Ghana, stimulates employment, and creates opportunities for young people across the jewelry-making and precious metals value chain.

“Every cedi and every dollar spent on Ghanaian gold strengthens our economy, supports artisans, and builds a legacy for future generations,” she noted.

Goldboard Jewelry says it plans to establish flagship stores across Ghana and expand into major global cities, including Lagos, Johannesburg, London, New York, Zurich, and Dubai.

The company’s long-term goal is to become Africa’s leading gold jewelry and investment brand.

Ms. Donkor urged the media and the public to help amplify the message:
“Gold is not just a product; it is a legacy. And that legacy must benefit Ghana.”

Presidential staffer Nana Yaa Jantuah urges ILAPI to strengthen support to public sector

Senior Presidential Staffer Nana Yaa Jantuah has urged the Institute for Liberty and Policy Innovation (ILAPI) to deepen its contribution to the public sector, especially in enhancing the work of the Public Accounts Committee.

She made the call during her keynote address at the High-Level Business Regulatory Dialogue held at the Coconut Grove Hotel.

She therefore appealed to public institutions to become more accessible and responsive to the needs of Ghanaians.

Nana Yaa Jantuah also highlighted ongoing efforts to ensure that the implementation of the 24-hour economy is properly structured.

She revealed that the relevant documents are already before Parliament and assured that President John Dramani Mahama’s vision for the policy will begin to materialize soon.
