The Ghana Education Service (GES) has announced that 99 Senior High Schools (SHSs) will revert from the double-track system to the single-track calendar beginning 31 October 2025, with the start of the 2025/2026 academic year.
In a statement signed by its Public Relations Officer, Daniel Fenyi, the Service said the adjustment aims to restore uninterrupted academic schedules, enhance teaching and learning, and reduce pressure on both students and teachers.
According to the GES, the single-track timetable will also allow for the smooth organization of extracurricular activities such as sports, cultural events, and club programmes, while giving parents and guardians a more predictable school calendar.
The Service clarified, however, that the change does not amount to a total abolition of the double-track system.
“Both single-track and double-track schools will continue to operate side by side. This particular adjustment affects 99 schools,” the statement explained.
Under the 2025/2026 calendar, single-track schools will end the academic year on 21 August 2026, while double-track schools will close on 4 September 2026. GES said this arrangement ensures both models run smoothly without disrupting the overall school year.
The transition is part of a wider package of education reforms that will see the construction of nursery, primary, and junior high facilities under the 2025 District Assemblies Common Fund, alongside the reactivation of Parent-Teacher Associations to improve school governance.
The government will also review and complete stalled E-Block projects, cancel teacher licensure examinations, and provide free sanitary pads to reduce absenteeism among schoolgirls.
Other measures include the timely release of academic calendars and the upgrading of more than 30,000 diploma teachers who have completed degree programmes.
The Service assured parents, teachers, and the wider public that these reforms demonstrate its commitment to building a stable, effective, and inclusive education system nationwide.
