The Member of Parliament for Shama Constituency, Hon. Emilia Arthur, has taken a significant step towards promoting girls’ education and health by distributing sanitary pads to schoolgirls in her constituency.
This initiative, supported by the “Lydia Double Double Save Our Girls” project, aims to help girls stay in school during their menstrual periods and prevent health hazards associated with poor menstrual hygiene.
Speaking with the media, the Honourable Minister emphasized that her visit was purposely account for her stewardship now that parliament is in recess.
She noted that despite President Mahama’s promised to provide free sanitary pads to all school girls in Ghana, it is imperative to take the lead by showing the way and to show how she has the girl child education at heart.
Hon. Arthur and her team have demonstrated how to use sanitary pads properly, as some girls had never seen them before.
Hon. Emilia Arthur said her visit to schools and communities in Shama Constituency demonstrates her commitment to the people she represents.
Lydia Angel Nutekor, President of the “Lydia Double Double Save Our Girls Initiative,” shared the inspiration behind her organization’s efforts to provide sanitary pads to young girls.
She revealed that her motivation stemmed from conversations with girls who resorted to using cloth and other makeshift materials during their menstrual cycles due to financial constraints.
These girls according to her often fall prey to exploitation by men who offer them money for sanitary products, only to end up in compromising situations, including unwanted pregnancies.
Recognizing this pressing issue, Nutekor partnered with the local Member of Parliament to champion the cause and encourage others to follow suit.
She also praised President John Mahama’s initiative to provide free sanitary pads to schoolgirls in Ghana, citing the positive impact it will have on their health and well-being.
She noted that this move will help prevent unwanted pregnancies and promote menstrual hygiene among young girls.
By providing sanitary pads and promoting education on menstrual hygiene, Nutekor said the initiative aims to empower girls and support their education.
This effort aligns with the broader goal of promoting girls’ empowerment and addressing the challenges they face in accessing basic necessities like sanitary products, she said.
