Ghana has taken a key step toward reviving its national airline with the inauguration of a 10-member task force on May 7, 2025.
The initiative, spearheaded by the Ministry of Transport, is part of government efforts to re-establish a national carrier nearly two decades after the collapse of Ghana Airways and its successor, Ghana International Airlines.
The task force is chaired by Charles Asare, former Managing Director of the Ghana Airports Company Limited, with aviation expert Twumasi Ankrah Selby as Vice Chair.
Members include senior industry leaders and government representatives, such as:
- Yvonne Nana Afriyie Opare – MD, Ghana Airports Company
- Hugh Tamakloe, Benjamin Ahlijah & Patricia Bonsu – Aviation Experts
- Rev. Stephen Arthur – Director-General, Ghana Civil Aviation Authority
- Joyce Bawa Mogtari – Former GACL Technical DG
- Daniel Acquah – Transport Ministry Rep
Their mandate is to finalize a sustainable business model, oversee regulatory and technical partnerships, and lay the groundwork for operations covering everything from staffing and route planning to fleet acquisition.
The task force will report regularly to the President via the Ministry of Transport.
President John Mahama has underscored the airline’s potential to fuel job creation, boost tourism, and strengthen Ghana’s regional air connectivity.
“We’re looking for a transparent, sustainable model that works for Ghanaians,” he said in earlier remarks.
The formation of the task force marks a fresh attempt to position Ghana as a major aviation hub in West Africa, with strong emphasis on strategic partnerships and long-term viability.
