Ghana and Mexico Deepen Sports Diplomacy and Youth Development Collaboration.

Ghana’s Minister for Sports and Recreation, Kofi Iddie Adams, hosted a courtesy visit from Mexico’s Ambassador to Ghana, Her Excellency Norma Ang, and Deputy Head of Mission, Fernando Alvarado Valenzuela, at the Ministry’s offices in Accra.

The meeting focused on enhancing sports diplomacy and fostering collaboration to boost youth development and technical expertise in various sports.

Ambassador Ang highlighted the role of sports in strengthening Mexico-Ghana relations, emphasizing Mexico’s commitment to partnerships in boxing, basketball, football, and more.

She shared Mexico’s expertise in training FIFA referees, sports management, and developing talent through university networks.

The delegation proposed a boxing photo exhibition celebrating Mexican champions and a film festival showcasing Mexico’s sporting heritage.

The Sports Minister also welcomed the delegation, noting that sports, particularly football and boxing, have long connected Ghanaians to Mexico.

He described sports as a universal language that promotes goodwill between nations.

The meeting included prominent Ghanaian sports figures, such as the Vice President of the Ghana Football Association, and the Presidents of the Ghana Boxing Federation, Baseball Federation, and Olympic Committee.

Hon. Kofi Adams praised Mexico’s role as a co-host of the 2026 FIFA World Cup alongside the United States and Canada, expressing hope that Ghana’s Black Stars would qualify and shine on the global stage.

Discussions explored collaboration in:

°Exchange programs for coaches, referees, and technical officials to build Ghana’s sports capacity.

°Promoting grassroots and women’s sports initiatives.

°Leveraging the Free Zones concept to attract investment in sports infrastructure.

°Encouraging sports tourism, with Ghana as a potential training hub for Mexican teams.

°Exploring special visa arrangements to ease fan travel during the 2026 World Cup.

The Minister says he’s committed to forming a dedicated working group to collaborate with the Mexican Embassy on a detailed partnership framework.

Both parties reaffirmed their dedication to deepening ties through sports, cultural exchanges, and mutual support.
