GH₵462m disbursed to nursing trainees as Mahama fulfills campaign promise

The Ministry of Health has confirmed the disbursement of GH₵462 million to cover six months’ allowances for over 120,000 nursing trainees nationwide.

According to the Ministry, this move fulfils a key campaign promise made by President John Dramani Mahama during the run-up to Ghana’s December 2024 elections.

The payment of nursing trainee allowances began on June 16, 2025, and will continue through the following week.

It applies to all nursing trainees enrolled in accredited institutions nationwide, covering key welfare needs such as accommodation, feeding, transport, and study materials.

The initiative fulfils a campaign promise by President Mahama to restore and regularise trainee allowances.

This rollout aligns with the 2025 Budget, in which Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson earmarked GH₵480 million for nursing trainees and GH₵203 million for teacher trainees, bringing the total allocation to GH₵683 million.

The National Health Students’ Association of Ghana (NAHSAG) welcomed the integration of these payments into the Controller and Accountant General’s payroll system, ensuring regular and timely disbursement.

During his Thank You Tour in Tamale, President Mahama confirmed that arrears from January to June would be cleared, with monthly automated payments commencing from July.

The government has confirmed that the automatic rollout of nursing trainee allowances will begin in July 2025.

This policy is expected to continue into subsequent financial years, depending on future budgetary provisions.

Nursing trainee associations are anticipated to provide updates on the implementation process and may submit requests for improvements where necessary.

Meanwhile, the teacher trainee allowance programme, funded under the same budget could follow a similar disbursement timeline.
