Interior minister imposes curfew on Sawla-Tuna-Kalba over land dispute tensions

The Minister for the Interior, Mubarak Mohammed Muntaka, has imposed a 6:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. curfew on Sawla-Tuna-Kalba and surrounding communities in the Savannah Region, effective Wednesday, August 27, 2025, following violent clashes linked to land disputes.

The curfew, enforced through an Executive Instrument on the advice of the National Security Council, comes amid heightened security concerns and recent displacements of residents.

In a statement, the Interior Ministry urged chiefs, opinion leaders, and residents to remain calm and resolve grievances through non-violent means.

Authorities have announced restrictions that include a ban on carrying firearms, ammunition, or offensive weapons, a prohibition on two or more persons riding together on motorbikes; and a ban on wearing war regalia.

The Ministry warned that violators, particularly those found with weapons, will be arrested and prosecuted.

Government said the curfew is part of wider security measures aimed at restoring calm and protecting lives and property in the area.
