Vice President Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang has called on church choirs across the country to extend their mission beyond music by taking up active roles in environmental stewardship and community development.
Delivering a keynote message on behalf of the Vice President by Dr. Samuel Ofosu Ampofo at the 2025 Biennial Conference of the National Evangelical Presbyterian Church Choirs Union in Tamale, Dr. Ampofo said, choirs have the potential to transform society if they pair their musical gifts with practical action.
“Imagine the transformative impact if every choir in Ghana undertook a community project, whether in environmental care, youth mentorship, or cultural preservation,” he noted.
“The collective ripple effect of such action would touch every corner of our society.” He added.
The conference, themed “Care for Creation: The Task and Mission to Improve the Newness of the Church Choir,” brought together choristers, clergy, and church leaders nationwide.
Dr. Ampofo praised the Evangelical Presbyterian Church for its longstanding role in education, healthcare, and social development, citing institutions like Bimbila College of Education and the Wapuli Health Centre as evidence of its commitment to national progress.
He also highlighted the church’s pivotal contribution to Ghana’s cultural and musical heritage, noting that figures such as Dr. Ephraim Amu, Ken Kafui, and Professor George Dor had carried the E.P. tradition onto the global stage.
On the conference theme, he urged choirs to lead by example in environmental care through tree planting, clean-up campaigns, and sustainable practices, stressing that protecting creation is “an act of worship.”
Dr. Ampofo also called for a renewal of church music, encouraging choirs to blend traditional hymns with contemporary expressions, mentor young choristers, and use music as a tool for evangelism, healing, and social transformation.
“The choir is not simply an accompaniment to worship; it is its heartbeat,” he said. “Through your harmonies, you inspire faith, lift the weary, and bring heaven closer to earth.”
Dr. Ampofo assured the union of government’s appreciation and support, adding that choirs are “instruments of renewal not only for the Church but also for the nation.”
