President John Dramani Mahama has vowed that anyone involved in romance scams operating from Ghana will be extradited and prosecuted, as his government deepens cooperation with international partners to tackle cyber-enabled fraud.
Speaking in Accra, Mr Mahama said evidence-based investigations will be used to identify suspects and, where appropriate, Ghana will invoke its extradition treaties to send culprits to jurisdictions demanding prosecution.
“Anybody involved in romance scams, whether you are a foreigner or a Ghanaian citizen, we will hand you over to be tried and punished accordingly,” he said.
The President also revealed that some insiders within financial institutions have been implicated in aiding cybercrime networks, a development he said the government and security agencies are treating with urgency.
He pledged continued collaboration with international law-enforcement partners to dismantle syndicates and bring masterminds to justice.
Mahama’s remarks come amid heightened global scrutiny of transnational romance and investment scams that target vulnerable victims overseas.
The President signalled that Ghana will next move to ratify and implement international legal instruments on cybercrime to strengthen cross-border investigations and mutual legal assistance.
