President John Dramani Mahama has charged newly sworn-in Justices of the Court of Appeal to help restore hope and confidence in Ghana’s judiciary.
He stressed that the courts must live up to their duty of protecting the rights of citizens, adding that the Court of Appeal in particular must reaffirm the principle that no wrong is beyond remedy.
The President made the remarks on Thursday, October 2, 2025, when he swore into office 20 Justices of the Court of Appeal, including 11 women.
“For when citizens walk into the courts of this nation, they do not simply seek judgments. They seek hope, hope that the law will protect them, hope that their rights will be respected, and hope that their voices will be heard. And today, as we swear you in, we are renewing that hope in our people. The Court of Appeal is the people’s court of renewal. It is here that errors are corrected, injustices are reversed, and the principle reaffirmed that no wrong is beyond remedy,” President Mahama said.
He further noted that the authority vested in the Justices is not only legal but profoundly moral.
“For many Ghanaians, the Court of Appeal is often the last hope for justice when all other avenues have been exhausted. That is why the authority we assume today is not only legal but profoundly moral. You hold in your hands the power to heal wounds, to restore confidence, and to guide our nation towards fairness,” he added.
Acknowledging recent criticisms of the judiciary, President Mahama said such scrutiny is not a rejection of justice but rather proof that Ghanaians still believe in the courts.
“In recent times, our courts have not escaped criticism. Citizens have openly and sometimes harshly questioned judicial decisions. But I want to say clearly: criticism of judgments is not the end of hope. It is the evidence of hope. It shows that Ghanaians still believe in the courts, that justice still matters, and that verdicts have meaning in their lives,” he emphasized.
President Mahama has sworn in 20 new Justices of the Court of Appeal, along with Mrs. Franklina Gesila Adanu.
The new Justices are, Justin Kofi Dorgu, Daniel Mensah, George Buadi, Olivia Obeng Owusu, John Bosco Nabarese, Jennifer Anne Myers Ahmed, Emmanuel Senyo Amedahe, Kwasi Anokye Gyimah, Dr. Richmond Osei-Hwere, Francis Apangano Achibonga, Ali Baba Abature, Abena Asuamah Oppong, Mariama Sammo, Mary Maame Ekua Yanzuh, Ayitey Armah-Tetteh, Charity Akosua Asem, Enyonam Adinyira, Sheila Minta, Douglas Seidu, and Charles Adjei Wilson.
