Vice President Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang on Thursday, October 9, 2025, joined world and business leaders at the Global Gateway Forum in Brussels, as discussions opened on strategies to strengthen global investments and partnerships.
The European Commission, under its Global Gateway investment strategy, and the World Bank Group are deepening their strategic collaboration to deliver a new generation of connectivity projects.
The initial pipeline includes 18 high-impact investments across energy, transport, and digital infrastructure in Africa, Asia, the Pacific, Latin America, and the Caribbean.
The partnership will feature regular high-level engagements and progress assessments to ensure that projects move efficiently from planning to financing, and from financing to job creation, essential services, and tangible development outcomes.
Speaking on the opening day of the Forum, World Bank Group President Ajay Banga emphasized that “creating jobs is a strategic choice.”
He noted that jobs in emerging economies not only expand local opportunities but also fuel global demand.
“That is why this partnership matters,” he said, adding that joint investments between the World Bank and the European Commission can unlock private capital and achieve results at a scale neither institution could reach alone.
President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, highlighted that the collaboration represents a new chapter in global development financing.
“Today, we are taking our partnership with the World Bank to the next level,” she said.
“This new framework will guide how we steer, govern, and monitor joint projects in key sectors such as energy, transport, and digital infrastructure.”
Vice President Prof. Opoku-Agyemang is expected to participate in a high-level panel discussion later in the day on “The State of the World,” where she is likely to make a case for Ghana’s investment priorities and strategic benefits from the Forum.
The Global Gateway is the European Union’s external investment strategy, aimed at building smart, clean, and secure connections across the digital, energy, and transport sectors, while also strengthening health, education, and research systems worldwide.
