President Mahama calls for stronger Ghana–China ties, expresses concern over decline in global multilateralism

President John Dramani Mahama has called for stronger ties between Ghana and China, describing the move as timely amid what he termed the growing trend of unilateral actions by some nations, despite the global commitment to multilateralism.

According to President Mahama, such unilateral approaches are undermining the rules-based global trade order established after the Second World War.

“The world is changing rapidly. After the Second World War, we all agreed that we would adopt a multilateral world order. Unfortunately, some countries have decided to act unilaterally, both in their relations with other nations and in ways that destroy the rules-based world trade system we all agreed to,” he said, expressing concern.

President Mahama emphasized the need for stronger trade relations between Ghana and China, noting that the long-standing friendship between the two nations, dating back to the era of Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, Ghana’s first President, should be deepened to benefit their citizens.

“As the world becomes more unpredictable, this is a time when countries like Ghana and China, and other partners that believe in multilateralism, should stand even closer together. We appreciate the work China is doing in this regard,” he said.
“Let me congratulate China and thank you for the support you continue to give Africa through FOCAC and the Belt and Road Initiative.”

Speaking during a bilateral meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing, President Mahama expressed optimism about strengthening bilateral and trade relations between Ghana and China during his tenure.

He reaffirmed his commitment to fostering progress not only for Ghana but also for Africa as a whole.

President Mahama also commended President Xi for his leadership in advancing women’s empowerment, describing China’s efforts as vital to accelerating the implementation of the 1995 Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action.

He further expressed gratitude to President Xi Jinping for inviting him to participate in the Global Leadership Meeting on Women in Beijing, and for sending a high-powered delegation to his inauguration on January 7, 2025.
