Finance minister inspects abandoned Takoradi market circle project, government commits to revival

The Minister for Finance, Dr Cassiel Ato Forson, visited the stalled redevelopment site of the Takoradi Market Circle in the Western Region on Saturday, 8 November 2025, inspecting the project which has remained dormant for approximately three years.

The visit comes ahead of the presentation of the 2026 Budget Statement next Thursday.

During the tour, the minister described the site as “a symbol of economic promise for thousands of traders and families”, and assured that the project has been designated a high‐priority government initiative with work due to resume early 2026.

“The contractor will return to the site next year once the ongoing debt‑restructuring is fully concluded,” he affirmed.

Accompanied by the Deputy Finance Minister Thomas Nyarko Ampem, Western Regional Minister Joe Nelson, and the Metropolitan Chief Executive of the Sekondi‑Takoradi Metropolitan Assembly (STMA) Fredrick Faustinus Faidoo, the minister used the visit to highlight the link between infrastructure revival and national economic recovery.

When completed, the Takoradi Market Circle redevelopment project is expected to transform one of Ghana’s oldest trading hubs into a modern commercial complex.

The planned amenities include 2,408 stores, 33 restaurants and food courts, bulk‑breaking areas, a dedicated car park, administrative offices, police and fire stations, among other facilities.

The project had been suspended for around three years, largely due to financing constraints linked to Ghana’s broader debt restructuring.

The minister confirmed the contractor’s return is tied to the completion of the government’s external creditor negotiations and internal debt restructuring process.

For thousands of traders displaced by the project’s halt, the minister’s assurance offers renewed hope that their return to a modern facility is imminent.

The visit is part of a government strategy to underscore infrastructure revival streams within the upcoming 2026 budget and national growth agenda.
