Weija Gbawe Municipal Hospital Forced to Use One Surgical Ward for Both Men and Women Due to Bed Shortage

The Weija Gbawe Municipal Hospital in the Greater Accra Region currently accommodates both male and female surgical patients in a single ward owing to a severe shortage of beds and essential equipment.

This challenge came to the fore when Ghanaian and African music icon Kojo Antwi donated hospital beds and other medical items to the facility as part of his birthday celebrations on Monday, November 24, 2025.

The hospital’s Medical Superintendent, Dr. David Oppong, explained that the facility has long operated with only one surgical ward. However, preparations are underway to create a dedicated female surgical section early next year.

“We have a surgical section, and God willing, from the beginning of next year, we will have a female section,”

Dr. Oppong said. “As it is now, we mix male and female, but we have secured another space that can take about five beds for the female ward. These new beds will serve us wonderfully.”

He added that while the new ward has been secured, it still lacks basic logistics such as chairs, tables and computers. Dr. Oppong appealed to individuals and organisations willing to support the facility, stressing the hospital’s commitment to delivering quality healthcare.

“Whatever assistance we receive, we will ensure we give our best to every patient who walks through our doors, irrespective of who they are,” he assured.

Kojo Antwi, known affectionately as The Maestro, said the donation forms part of his longstanding commitment to supporting health institutions across the country.

“It’s my birthday, so I need to do something for the community. The music is for the people, and gestures like this touch lives,”
he noted. “This is not the first time. I started when Prof. Kwabena Frimpong-Boateng was CEO of Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital.”

The celebrated musician recalled past donations to the National Cardiothoracic Centre and contributions in Kwahu, adding that the Weija Gbawe Municipal Hospital holds personal significance for him because he resides close to the facility.

“This hospital is home for me, and that’s why I chose to support them,” he said.
