Multilateral cooperation remains key to solving global challenges – Mahama decries rising unilateralism

President John Dramani Mahama has expressed concern over the growing trend of unilateral decision-making by global superpowers, warning that such actions cannot serve as effective solutions to global challenges like climate change.

He stressed that countries with shared values must deepen collaboration and form new trading partnerships, noting that unilateral tariffs imposed by some nations threaten the rules-based international trading system built over decades.

Speaking during a courtesy call on him at the Jubilee House by His Royal Highness Prince Edward, the Duke of Edinburgh, on Tuesday, November 25, 2025, President Mahama said it has become increasingly difficult for countries to rely on the multilateral global order established after World War II.

He cautioned that recent unilateral actions undermine the foundation of that order.

“Countries wake up in the morning and impose tariffs on anybody else. I think it is upending the rules-based trading system that we all have nurtured for years,” the President said.

President Mahama emphasized that multilateral cooperation remains essential for addressing shared global challenges.

“Climate crisis affects all parts of the world, and no one country can adapt or find a solution to it alone. The only way we can tackle the climate crisis is multilaterally, and I want to congratulate the UK for its leadership on climate action and resilience,” he stated.

He added that at a time of shifting global dynamics, progress will depend on “a coalition of the willing.”

“We must develop new partnerships that allow us to work together not as individual countries but as coalitions of the willing,” he said, adding that Ghana’s longstanding relationship with the United Kingdom positions both countries to advance this agenda.

“There is no better country to partner with than the United Kingdom, which has been a historical ally of Ghana since independence,” he noted.

President Mahama also reaffirmed government’s commitment to supporting the Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award programme.

He praised the initiative for providing opportunities for young people through scholarships and character-building experiences.

“It is a motivator for our young people. It instills discipline, creativity, and ambition. Over the years, our youth have shown great interest in the Duke of Edinburgh Award. As you step into very big shoes, the Government of Ghana will continue to partner with the award committee to ensure that our young people participate as actively as possible,” he assured.
