The Deputy Women’s Organizer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Abigail Akwambea Mensah, has strongly condemned comments allegedly made by Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin against Presidential Staffer Nana Yaa Jantuah, following the presentation of a petition at the Presidency.
Markin who is also the MP for Effutu reportedly referred to Madam Jantuah as a ‘nobody’ when she appeared to receive their petition on behalf of the Presidency after the NPP’s demonstration on Thursday, August 6, 2026.
In a statement issued on her Facebook wall, Madam Akwambea Mensah described Mr Markin’s remarks as “deeply offensive, sexist and disrespectful,” arguing that they undermine the contributions of women serving in leadership and public office.
According to her, the Minority Leader’s alleged description of Nana Yaa Jantuah as a “nobody” and an “unmatched personality” was not only an attack on the individual but also an affront to women who continue to serve Ghana with competence and dedication.
She further expressed concern over what she described as an attempt to question Nana Yaa Jantuah’s suitability to receive a petition on behalf of the Presidency, insisting that such a position reflects a mindset that seeks to marginalize women in positions of authority.
“Nana Yaa Jantuah holds a legitimate and respected role at the Presidency. To dismiss her on the basis of gender is to undermine the principles of merit, professionalism and equality,” the statement said.
Nana Yaa Jantuah currently serves as a Presidential Staffer at the Jubilee House.
Abigail Mensah said the comments raise broader concerns about the treatment and perception of women within the New Patriotic Party (NPP), questioning whether women in leadership positions are accorded the respect they deserve.
She consequently called on the Minority Leader to issue an immediate and unreserved apology to Nana Yaa Jantuah and to Ghanaian women.
The NDC’s Deputy National Women’s organizer also urged the leadership of the NPP to publicly clarify its stance on gender equality and distance itself from what she termed discriminatory and demeaning remarks.
Reaffirming her commitment to women’s empowerment, Madam Mensah stated that she would continue to advocate for the dignity, respect and full participation of women in governance and national development.
The Minority Leader, who is also the Member of Parliament for Effutu, has not publicly responded to the statement at the time of filing this report.
