The Chamber of Petroleum Consumers (COPEC) has called on the Ghana National Gas Company to take decisive measures to lower the cost of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), making clean cooking energy more affordable and accessible to households nationwide.
Speaking on behalf of civil society organisations (CSOs) in the oil and gas sector, COPEC Executive Director Duncan Amoah emphasized that reducing LPG prices is critical to enabling more families to transition from charcoal to safer and cleaner cooking alternatives.
His remarks came on the sidelines of a stakeholder engagement organised by Ghana Gas, which brought together industry players, policymakers, and advocacy groups to discuss the opportunities and challenges facing the gas sector.
“Ghana Gas has an obligation to all Ghanaians to drive down the cost of LPG so that every home can switch from charcoal to LPG,” Mr. Amoah said.
He noted that while the company plays a strategic role in the national clean energy agenda, more concrete interventions are needed to achieve widespread LPG adoption, particularly among low-income households.
Mr. Amoah further highlighted the dual nature of gas as both a valuable national resource and a potentially dangerous commodity, stressing the need for effective government oversight to prevent operational risks and past sectoral challenges.
He also advocated for the establishment of a well-resourced and clearly mandated agency to oversee gas transmission infrastructure and operations, ensuring efficient coordination without duplication of roles.
In response, Ghana Gas CEO Madam Judith Adjobah Blay commended stakeholders for their active participation, describing the meeting as timely and constructive.
She reaffirmed the company’s commitment to addressing operational challenges and enhancing transparency, reliability, and resilience across the national gas supply chain.
Her remarks signalled a renewed effort by Ghana Gas to collaborate with stakeholders and refine strategies aimed at ensuring efficient and secure gas delivery nationwide.
