Police CID probes viral video alleging kidnapping and robbery of American woman

The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service has begun investigations into a viral video in which an American national, Arianna Naomi Mackey, claims she was kidnapped and robbed by five masked men she alleged were police officers conducting a snap-check in Accra.

According to a CID statement, preliminary findings indicate that the video was recorded at a hotel in Accra where Ms. Mackey and two companions were lodging.

Police investigations further confirmed that the group checked out of the hotel on December 5, 2025, and that Ms. Mackey left Ghana the same day through the Kotoka International Airport.

The Police noted that although Ms. Mackey was contacted to assist with the investigation, she said she could not identify the alleged officers involved and was unable to provide the vehicle’s registration number.

She also declined to share the contact details of a friend she claimed was present during the alleged incident, saying the individual did not wish to be involved.

The CID added that Ms. Mackey has since deleted the viral video and stopped responding to calls and messages from investigators, eventually blocking the investigative team.

The Ghana Police Service said efforts are ongoing, through appropriate diplomatic channels to secure her cooperation.

The police stressed that such allegations are taken seriously and assured the public of its commitment to establishing the facts and ensuring a thorough investigation.
