Dr. Fred Awaah has been appointed and sworn in as Chairman of the Governing Board of the National Sports Authority (NSA) by the Minister for Sports and Recreation, Hon. Kofi Iddie Adams.
The ceremony, held in the conference room of the Ministry of Sports and Recreation, marked the inauguration of the new board, which is composed of members drawn from the sporting fraternity, academia, industry, and politics.
In his remarks, Dr. Awaah expressed gratitude to President John Dramani Mahama and the sector minister for the confidence reposed in the board.
He highlighted the team’s potential to elevate sports beyond entertainment.
“I am confident that, with the calibre of individuals representing various stakeholder organisations, we will work effectively to move sports from a social entertainment enterprise to one that directly contributes to national economic development.
With this team, I am convinced that by the close of our tenure, sports as a tool for development will contribute more than the current 1.4 per cent to Ghana’s GDP,” he said.
The new chairman also pledged equal attention to all sports disciplines and committed to forging partnerships with local and international investors to develop human resources, expand infrastructure across Ghana’s regions, enhance ethics and integrity, and align the sector with the African Union’s Agenda 2063 and the Sustainable Development Goals.
The inauguration signals the Mahama administration’s push to reform and professionalise Ghana’s sports sector, with a focus on economic impact, inclusivity, and sustainable growth.
