A 21-year-old suspect was killed in an exchange of gunfire with Secret Service agents after he opened fire at a White House security checkpoint on Saturday evening, officials confirmed.
The suspect has been identified as Nasire Best, a 21-year-old man known to the Secret Service with a documented history of mental health issues.
President Donald Trump praised the officers for their “swift and professional action.” In a post on Truth Social, he described the gunman as having a “violent history and possible obsession with our Country’s most cherished structure.”
The incident comes just one month after another gunman opened fire at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner.
The shooting remains under investigation, and road closures around the White House are expected to remain in place overnight.
Timeline of Events:
Shortly before 6:00 p.m. local time (23:00 GMT), Best approached a checkpoint at the intersection of 17th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue NW, near the Eisenhower Executive Office Building. He pulled a gun from his bag and began firing at officers.
Secret Service agents returned fire, striking the suspect. He was transported to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
A bystander was also wounded in the shooting. The Secret Service has not released details on the bystander’s condition. No officers were injured.
