Angry protesters attacked and set fire to tents at an Ebola treatment centre in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo’s Ituri province, after demanding the bodies of relatives who died from the disease.
Local officials said police fired teargas and warning shots to disperse crowds attempting to force their way into Rwampara Hospital near Bunia. The families reportedly rejected official claims that their relatives had died of Ebola and insisted on taking the bodies for burial themselves.
Health authorities have highlighted persistent mistrust of medical workers as a major obstacle in the conflict-affected region, calling for intensified public awareness campaigns to combat misinformation.
The Ebola outbreak was declared on May 15. Health officials and the World Health Organization have so far recorded around 600 suspected cases and 139 probable deaths.
