A South African court has paused the parliamentary impeachment process against President Cyril Ramaphosa.
The Western Cape High Court issued an interim interdict on Friday, preventing the impeachment committee from proceeding with public hearings. The order will remain in place until Ramaphosa’s review application regarding the independent panel’s report is finalised, expected in early September.
The proceedings stem from the 2020 Phala Phala scandal, involving the theft of foreign currency from the president’s game farm in Limpopo. The independent panel had found initial evidence suggesting possible constitutional violations.
The Presidency and the African National Congress welcomed the ruling, citing the need for a fair process. Opposition parties criticised the decision, saying it delays accountability.
Parliament has confirmed it will abide by the court order. The temporary interdict does not rule on the substance of the allegations against the president.
