Vice President Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang has urged the Methodist Church Ghana Northern Accra Diocese Women’s Fellowship to incorporate digital skills into its training programmes to equip women for the changing world of work.
She said the national emphasis on technical and vocational training presented an opportunity for women to develop practical skills that would enable them to compete and create opportunities for themselves and others.
Professor Opoku-Agyemang made the call at the 3rd Biennial Conference of the Northern Accra Diocese Women’s Fellowship of the Methodist Church Ghana, held at the Most Rev. Kwesi Dickson Memorial Methodist Church, Adjiringanor Airport East Circuit.
Speaking on the theme, “Walking in the Word, Equipped for Every Good Work,” the Vice President also urged the Fellowship to include financial literacy and entrepreneurship in its training programmes.
She said equipping a woman with skills, together with financial assistance and mentoring, could turn knowledge into a livelihood and help her become self-reliant.
Professor Opoku-Agyemang said Ghanaian women should not be left out as the world of work was being reshaped, stressing the need for them to acquire skills that would enable them to compete in an evolving economy.
She said women’s economic empowerment was a matter of national economic development, noting that the cost of living, access to affordable finance and the fragility of small businesses were largely borne by women.
The Vice President said the Government’s policy framework prioritised enterprise and economic transformation, with particular attention to women’s economic empowerment, and pointed to the soon-to-be-launched Women’s Development Bank as a step towards expanding financing opportunities for women.
She also commended the Fellowship for its response to the Kantamanto Market fire, describing it as an example of the Methodist tradition of faith through service.
The conference, which brought together members of the Women’s Fellowship, was held under the theme “Walking in the Word, Equipped for Every Good Work,” with activities centred on faith, fellowship and service.
