Kufuor’s brother endorses Mahama for his massive achievements; blasts NPP

A founding member of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) Mr. Andrew Kwasi Kufuor ESQ., has publicly declared his support for President John Dramani Mahama, praising his administration’s economic management while heavily criticizing the current leadership of his own party.

The 80-year old Mr Kufuor, a cousin to former President John Agyekum Kufuor made this declaration during an interview with Power FM and TV XYZ at his Accra residence on Thursday, October 30, 2026.

Reflecting on the country’s economic trajectory, Mr. Kufuor noted that living costs under President Mahama have stabilized compared to the previous administration of former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.

“Myself and my household will support Mahama to succeed with all our hearts,” Mr. Kufour declared.

He added that public sentiment towards the President is shifting even in traditional political strongholds.

According to him, an increasing number of residents in the Ashanti Region are warming up to President Mahama due to his economic policies and transformation agenda.

He pointed to the 2024 general election outcomes where Mahama secured roughly 33% of the presidential votes in the region and the NDC expanded its parliamentary presence to nine seats as clear evidence of this political shift.

Sharp Criticism of NPP and its Leadership Choices

The veteran politician did not hold back in his assessment of the NPP’s recent strategic decisions, questioning the party’s ability to reclaim power under its present leadership structure.

He criticized the NPP’s decision to re-select former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as its flagbearer, describing the move in blunt terms.

He also questioned the choice of Kojo Bamba as the party’s First Vice Chairman, arguing that the NPP overlooked more experienced stalwart members who were better suited for key leadership roles.

Journey From NPP Founding Member to NDC Sympathiser

Recounting his political evolution, Mr. Kufuor shared that although he was actively present when the name of the New Patriotic Party was being crafted, his political perspective gradually transformed through conversations with key National Democratic Congress (NDC) figures, including Sylvester Mensah of EXIM Bank and Kofi Portuphy.

“After speaking with Sylvester Mensah, I realised that the NDC was the better option for me,” he recalled, explaining how the party’s ideology aligned more closely with his personal beliefs.

This re-orientation led to a historic meeting at Kuku Hill, where Mr. Mensah introduced him to the late former President John Evans Atta Mills. Also present was Mr. Ato Ahwoi—an alumnus of Prempeh College alongside Kufuor.

While Mr. Ahwoi expressed initial surprise at his presence given his family ties to President Kufuor, Prof. Mills warmly reminded the gathering that political choice remains every citizen’s fundamental right.

Following those meetings, Mr. Kufuor began making financial contributions to the campaigns of both the late President Mills and then-running mate John Dramani Mahama.

“My donation was out of kindness. I did not expect anything in return because I had fallen in love with the NDC’s ideology,” he emphasized.

Calls for Accountability

Looking ahead, the elder statesman urged the current government to take swift and decisive steps regarding governance and accountability.

He called for the establishment of a dedicated tribunal to investigate alleged corruption involving figures from the former NPP administration.

“Whoever misbehaves must be dealt with an iron hand,” Mr. Kufour urged.
