The Ghana Armed Forces has handed over the right of way clearance for the construction of the Accra Kumasi Expressway to government.
The exercise completes the preparatory works as government will soon award the project to a contractor.
The Accra Kumasi Expressway commences from Ablekuma in the Greater Accra Region through Asamankese in the Eastern region through Sewua in the Ashanti region.
You will recall, that president John Dramani Mahama during the 2026 State of the Nation Address in February hinted of the project. The 48-engineers regiment of the Ghana Armed Forces was subsequently contracted to clear the right of way within twenty (20) weeks.
Speaking at the handover ceremony on Monday, September 14, 2026 President Mahama expressed satisfaction over the delivery of the project with the stated times despite the hurdles.
“From Ablekuma in Greater Accra to Sewua in the Ashanti Region, within 19 weeks, 175.6 kilometres of road passing through virgin forests, crossing rivers and streams, our Ghana Armed
Forces can today announce to all of us, as they say in military jargon, mission accomplished,” President Mahama said.
President John Mahama said though government will in the coming months cuts sod for the construction of the expressway, the Ministry of Roads and Highways has been directed to contract the 48-engineers as the major sub-contractor due to their efficiency.
“I’ve asked the Minister of Roads and Highways to incorporate the engineers regiment, the Ghana Armed Forces as the major sub-contractor to the contractor on this Accra-Kumasi expressway” he directed.
President Mahama said the Finance Ministry has earmarked Two Billion Dollars ($2B) to fund the project when commenced.
“Let me announce that the Minister of Finance has put aside two billion dollars for financing this Accra-Kumasi expressway. The money is ready it is sitting in a special account at the Bank of Ghana” he stated.
Under a special purpose vehicle that has been registered under the Ghana Infrastructure Investment Fund called the Accra Kumasi Expressway Limited, it will have Chief Executive Officer (CEO), management team, a governing board that will supervise the activities of the Accra Kumasi Expressway Limited.
It will have two toll interchanges, one on each bound, eight interchanges, four rest stops, a tow trucks along the road and CCTV cameras to monitor compliance of drivers.
