President Mahama discusses trade and investment opportunities with India’s Minister for External Affairs.

President John Dramani Mahama on Tuesday granted an audience to the Indian Minister for External Affairs, Dr Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, at the Presidency.

Their discussions centred on strengthening bilateral trade and investment in Ghana’s rail sector and pharmaceutical industry, growing demand for a new world order that frowns on unilateralism and abuse of nations, and ways to strengthen Ghana-India relations.

“In the area of trade, we are already doing quite well. Our exports to India have increased from just about US$ 3 billion to almost US$ 7 billion, driven mainly by goods exports,” he told the visiting Indian Minister.

President Mahama added, “we also have a significant import of agricultural machinery and automobiles, including buses, from India”, an indication of mutual benefit of trade between the two countries.

On the pharmaceutical industry, the President said Ghana is open to partnerships to manufacture drugs locally, a policy he said aligns with the Accra Reset, an agenda promoting health sovereignty.

“There are already positive signals. Currently, one of our major pharmaceutical companies, Atlantic Life Sciences, is from India and they are working closely with an indigenous company, KinaPharma, in developing vaccines for Ghana”, he added

President Mahama cited Prime Minister Modi’s visit in July 2025 and Dr Jaishankar’s follow-up as reflections of growing Ghana-India cooperation. A tangible symbol, he noted, is the Jubilee House, which was financed and built by an Indian Company during Ghana’s Jubilee year celebration, along with the benefits derived from the Ghana-India Kofi Annan Centre for ICT and the Tema-Mpakadan Railway Line.

The Indian Minister for External Affairs extended warm greetings from Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Droupadi Murmu to President Mahama.

“And in fact, he is urging us that the comprehensive partnership that you and he decided upon was the task of the Foreign Ministers to give it more concrete shape to explore new possibilities and avenues for cooperation.” Dr Jaishankar said.

Present at the meeting were Chief of Staff Julius Debrah, Minister for Foreign Affairs Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, and other government officials.
