President John Drama says government is pursuing aggressive implementation measures to expand emergency bed capacity to at least 10 per cent of each facility’s functional bed capacity.
According to him, the move forms part of plans to expand Accident and Emergency Centres at Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, Tamale Teaching Hospital and 37 Military Hospital to achieve this 10 per cent target which are major referral facilities in the country.
Speaking at the opening of the 68th Annual General Conference of the Ghana Medical Association at the Central University on Friday, President Mahama recounted the successes of the piloted the Integrated Bed Management and Referral Coordination System (IBMRC). The pilot involves Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, Tamale Teaching Hospital, Greater Accra Regional Hospital at Ridge, 37 Military Hospital, the University of Ghana Medical Centre and the National Ambulance Service.
“The system is intended to help hospitals and ambulance teams identify facilities with the capacity to receive patients and coordinate their transfer. For it to serve that purpose, the information must reflect the actual clinical capacity available at each facility. Better referral arrangements also require adequate receiving capacity” he said.
He intimated that “work will begin next year on the expansion of Accident and Emergency Centres at Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, Tamale Teaching Hospital and 37 Military Hospital to achieve this 10 per cent target”.
President Mahama further stated that “the expansion will be matched with the necessary staff, equipment, oxygen and essential supplies to make the additional capacity fully operational”.
