Ghana’s efforts to build stronger strategic ties with leading global corporations gained fresh momentum after high-level talks between President John Dramani Mahama and senior Amazon executives on the sidelines of the 81st United Nations General Assembly in New York.
The meeting forms part of President Mahama’s broader push to reshape Ghana’s relationship with major American companies. The focus is shifting toward investment, technology, skills development, productive enterprise and job creation, moving beyond traditional development assistance.
At a separate U.S.–Ghana Presidential Roundtable held this week, President Mahama called for the next chapter of Ghana–U.S. relations to prioritise trade, investment, technology and strategic partnerships.
In a notable public endorsement after the discussions, David Zapolsky, Amazon’s Senior Vice President and Chief Global Affairs & Legal Officer, described his engagement with President Mahama as productive.
He highlighted Ghana’s potential role in Amazon’s efforts to expand broadband connectivity across Africa. Zapolsky oversees Amazon’s legal, policy, compliance and regulatory affairs.
The Amazon engagement highlights a growing dimension of Ghana’s economic diplomacy: leveraging high-level relationships to attract global capital, technology, expertise and market access. The partnership carries significance that extends well beyond broadband connectivity.
Improved high-speed internet access, especially in rural and underserved communities, could support digital education, healthcare delivery, financial inclusion, agriculture, entrepreneurship and e-commerce. It would also expand opportunities for young Ghanaians to participate in the global digital economy.
Such progress would further Ghana’s ambition to become a competitive digital and technology hub for West Africa, while positioning the country as host of the AfCFTA Secretariat as a strategic gateway for international businesses into the wider African market.
