The Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Hon. Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, MP, has called for a paradigm shift in the operations of the Ghana Geological Survey Authority (GGSA) to transform it into a commercially viable entity that weans itself off government subvention.

During his first official visit to the GGSA since his appointment on Thursday, 10thApril 2025, Hon. Armah-Kofi Buah expressed his disbelief that such a strategic institution still relies solely on government funding. He pledged to collaborate with management and staff to reposition the GGSA as a revenue-generating hub that contributes significantly to the national coffers.

“There is no reason why an organization like yours should constantly struggle with funding. We will take steps to improve your financial standing because the services you provide must translate into revenue. I don’t see why employees of other institutions should be paid better than you. Your work is critical, and I am committed to working with you to drive this change,” he emphasized.

The Minister described the GGSA as one of the most important institutions under his Ministry and assured that all necessary efforts would be directed toward its commercialization. He reiterated the need for staff and management across all institutions under his purview to align with the government’s reset agenda, spearheaded by President John Dramani Mahama. “Everyone here must work toward achieving the government’s reset agenda for the GGSA. • Operationalizing Act 928 (2016) – Strengthening the GGSA’s regulatory framework.
• Upgrading the National Seismic Network – Transitioning to advanced data transmission systems.
• Publishing Technical Geological Bulletins – Enhancing knowledge dissemination.

Omar B Homage: Revenue from my rendition will go to his family – Kuami Eugene

Ghana’s finest, Kuami Eugene, has paid homage to late Togolese music legend Omar B, known in private life as Ahiangban Omar.

Kuami Eugene, in paying homage to the fallen legend, did a rendition of Omar B’s classic hit song, “Awoo Mawugné.”

According to Kuami Eugene, a friend introduced Omar B’s songs to him, due to their creative semblance of ability to write, sing, and produce.

Against this backdrop, Kuami Eugene began to enquire about Omar B and realised he died at a point his career was thriving, leaving behind a young family.

Consequently, Kuami Eugene decided to go ahead with a rendition of his “Awoo mawugné” song, which has been on his heart and donate the revenue accrued to Omar B’s family.

“After I got the translation of the song from some friends, I realised he had put together some powerful lyrics, so I decided to do a rendition in his honour,” he said.

The Rockstar further revealed that, “This is not for profit. It’s purely out of love and respect. I have no intention of exploiting this work. All revenues generated from this upload will go directly to Omar B’s family.”

For this reason, it is Kuami Eugene’s prayer that the song generates a lot of views and money for the family of the late Omar B.

Due to his ingenuity coupled with his meteoric rise, Omar B became a role model and an inspiration to Togo’s young talents.

While a third album, dubbed ‘Me, Myself and I’, was released in 2019, Omar B died suddenly at the age of 35 on February 20, 2020, following a heart attack.

• Collaborating with communities, traditional leaders, and civil society to foster collective responsibility.

• Providing alternative livelihoods for affected communities to ensure economic resilience.

On his part, the Chief Director of the Ministry of Environment, Science and Technology, Mr. Partick Nimoh, who represented his Minister, Hon. Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed, said Ghana is committed to fulfilling its obligations under the Global Biodiversity Framework which provides a strategic roadmap for halting biodiversity loss and ensuring ecosystem restoration.

He hoped that the discussion being engaged in over the next three days will shape the policies and actions that determine the future of Ghana’s natural landscape.

The National Landscape Forum is expected to yield actionable strategies for sustainable environmental management, reinforcing Ghana’s efforts to combat illegal mining, deforestation, and climate change.

Delivering the keynote address on behalf of the Environmental Protection Authority (EPA), the Deputy Chief Executive for General Services at the (EPA), Dr. Jacob Anankware affirms the EPA’s commitment, partnership and mandate to safeguard Ghana’s environment and natural resources to chart sustainable pathways for the future.

He noted that the Nations economy is largely dependent on natural capital which supports livelihoods of more than 50% of the population directly linked to it.

To be able to manage Ghana’s Natural Capital, Mr. Anakware said, there is a need for quality, reliable and timely data which can be generated through Natural Capital Accounting (NCA).

“It will provide us with a corrective lens, a scientific and policy- relevant approach to integrate the value of ecosystem services and natural assets into decision making at the national, sector and district levels”.

He emphasized that compiling natural capital accounting is the first step but applying them to restore landscape, design nature-positive and align public and private sector actions.
