Leading member of the Democracy Hub, the group that held a street protest against illegal mining, has been admitted to the Police Hospital after reporting ill-health.
A police statement clarified that Barker-Vormawor, along with another member of the group, Fanny Otoo, who were in Police cells, had been transferred to the Police Hospital for medical care after both individuals complained of being unwell.
According to the statement, “Suspect Fanny Otoo, on Tuesday 24th September 2024, complained to the Police that he was indisposed, as the suspects in the case were being prepared for court.
“The Police sent him to the Police Hospital in Accra, where doctors at the hospital attended to him and later admitted him for further treatment.
The statement further noted that “Suspect Oliver Barker-Vormawor, was also taken to the Police Hospital for medical attention, having reported sick late last night, Tuesday 24th September 2024, where doctors assessed his condition and subsequently admitted him for treatment.”
The Police emphasized that at no point had they denied medical attention to Barker-Vormawor or any other suspects in custody, responding to any concerns regarding their well-being.
“The Police would like to inform the public that at no point in time have the Police denied these suspects any medical attention,” the statement reiterated.
Background
Oliver Barker-Vormawor, was arrested by the Ghana Police Service in connection with the recent protests organised by the group in Accra.
The protests, which resulted in roadblocks and the obstruction of traffic at key intersections, led to heightened tensions between the demonstrators and law enforcement.
Barker-Vormawor, a key figure in the movement, was taken into custody after the police announced that it was on a manhunt for him.
