Mahama Charts Bold Maritime Future at IMDEC 2025: A Renewed Vision for Regional Security and Blue Economy Growth

Accra, Ghana – At the 4th International Maritime Defence Exhibition and Conference (IMDEC), President John Dramani Mahama—represented by Chief of Staff Hon. Julius Debrah—delivered a powerful reaffirmation of Ghana’s commitment to regional maritime security, economic resilience, and international cooperation.

The President’s speech, delivered at Burma Camp on July 2nd, 2025, resonated with purpose and hope, laying out a bold and forward-thinking agenda for Ghana’s maritime future. Addressing security chiefs, diplomatic partners, and industry stakeholders from across the globe, Mahama’s message was clear: Ghana is ready to lead a new era of maritime security, innovation, and prosperity.

“The blue economy is our next frontier,” the speech declared. “It is time to match our aspirations with investments in technology, collaboration, and human capacity development.”

President Mahama’s vision was not merely about safeguarding Ghana’s coastline but about unlocking the full economic potential of West Africa’s maritime domain—from oil and gas infrastructure to fishing, port modernization, and regional trade corridors. He emphasized that maritime security is essential not only for protecting national assets but for advancing the broader goals of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) and the region’s industrial transformation.

Hon. Julius Debrah, who read the statement on behalf of the President, noted that Ghana would deepen cooperation with its neighbors and international allies to combat piracy, illicit trafficking, and environmental degradation in the Gulf of Guinea.

“We must adopt a shared security approach—no country can protect its maritime space in isolation,” he said. “Ghana under President Mahama’s leadership will build on smart partnerships with ECOWAS, the African Union, and global powers to protect our common waters and promote peace.”

The speech also outlined Ghana’s plan to enhance the capabilities of the Ghana Navy and allied agencies by investing in cutting-edge surveillance, joint training, and research facilities.

Observers hailed Mahama’s address as one of clarity and conviction, reinforcing his legacy as a pan-African statesman who believes in sustainable security, inclusive development, and technological innovation.

The President called on stakeholders present—both public and private—to support Ghana’s blueprint for the future. He reiterated that Ghana remains open for strategic investment and joint ventures in maritime logistics, shipbuilding, port infrastructure, and coastal tourism.

As the IMDEC 2025 conference continues, Ghana’s role as a beacon of stability and innovation in West Africa has once again taken center stage.

“Our waters hold the promise of economic empowerment,” President Mahama concluded. “Let us secure it. Let us protect it. And let us build a future upon it.”

Gov’t to commence payments to road contractors this month- President Mahama

Government will start paying debts owed to road contractors this month. Announcing this decision during a meeting with members of the Council of State at the Presidency on Monday, President John Dramani Mahama explained that the payments would allow contractors to return to their sites and resume work on stalled projects.

President Mahama stated that the Ministry of Finance has allocated funds specifically for this purpose, intended to offset a substantial part of the outstanding debts.

“I’m sure that some of the contractors who have been working on your projects will be paid so that they can go back on site and continue their work”, he announced.

He emphasised that the Minister for Finance is prioritising these payments as part of broader efforts to accelerate the completion of vital infrastructure projects and strengthen the government’s economic recovery plan.

Further details regarding the payments and their scope will be captured in the upcoming mid-year review of the budget statement, which will report on the economy’s performance over the first half of the year.

President Mahama also assured the Council that, following the presentation of the mid-year budget review, the government would again consult with them to discuss the administration’s performance and progress over the past six months.

Mahama underscores strong Ghana-Germany partnership

President John Dramani Mahama has bid farewell to the outgoing German Ambassador to Ghana, Daniel Krull, during a meeting at the Credentials Hall within the Presidency.

President Mahama reiterated Ghana’s commitment to building on the strong foundation of bilateral relations between the two countries. He emphasised the potential for deepened cooperation, particularly in the critical areas of economic development and security.

The President specifically commended Germany for its consistent support towards enhancing Ghana’s security architecture, citing significant contributions to the Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Centre (KAIPTC) and capacity-building initiatives for security personnel.

Addressing the evolving security landscape in the sub-region, President Mahama highlighted the growing threat posed by extreme terrorism, especially prevalent in the Sahel. He expressed Ghana’s readiness to work closely with Germany on targeted capacity training programmes aimed at bolstering regional efforts to combat this menace.

Touching upon the complex issue of irregular migration, President Mahama outlined Ghana’s collaborative efforts with international partners, including the International Organisation for Migration (IOM) and the European Union (EU). He stressed the importance of creating sustainable local opportunities for young people to mitigate the risks associated with perilous journeys across the Sahara and the Mediterranean.

President Mahama conveyed Ghana’s deep appreciation for Ambassador Krul’s service. “We appreciate you. You’re a friend of Ghana. And you’re welcome to visit any time you miss Ghana. You’re welcome to visit. And I wish you all the best in your future endeavours.”

‘Ghana can’t work 8-hours and expect to compete in 21st century global economy’ – Osei Akoto

A leading member of the ruling National Democratic Congress, Henry Osei Akoto, has said the launch of the 24-Hour Economy by the John Dramani Mahama-government will open up Ghana’s economy for growth.

He explained that the initiative, which he described as bipartisan, is the surest way for Ghana to compete on the global scale when it comes to economic growth and expansion.

Speaking in an interview following the launch of the policy, which is also known as 24H+ Agenda, on July 2, 2025, Osei Akoto said Ghana loses more money from the number of hours it sleeps, as compared to the hours the nation stays productive.

“The 24-Hour Economy has been the mantra and policy we have been marketing over the years and every Ghanaian knows it. So, people who say it is an after-thought are mistaken. What we are telling Ghanaians is that the only way to expand the economy, to open up the economy, to create opportunities in the country as we speak now is to work beyond the 8-hour practice we have now. We should be working for 24-hours.

“The country shouldn’t sleep. The hours we use to sleep are monies gone and so if we want to be part of the current dispensation of the 21st century world economy, then we have to open up the country by making sure we are working 24-hours,” he explained.

Calling on all to support the policy of the NDC, Henry Osei Akoto said that the launch by President Mahama is fulfilment of the promise he made to the country.

He added that the 24-Hour Economy will create opportunities for all, especially the youth, and help expand the economy.

He also stressed that with this policy afloat, it places Ghana among many countries of the world who are benefiting from working around the clock, boosting their economies.

“The launch of the 24-Hour Economy by the president today is a laudable idea. We all remember that before the election, he was going around the country telling people that he was going to expand the economy, create opportunities for the youth, and that there was going to be more money in the economy, and he is going to propel that through the 24-Hour Economy policy. Looking at what he’s done today, it really affirms what he said some few months back and Ghanaians should support him.

“It is a good initiative. It is happening everywhere in the world… you don’t go to Europe and after 10PM, the whole country is asleep. No. Not only in Europe, but even in some African countries. Got to North Africa; go to Egypt, go to Morocco and other places and see what is happening there. So, we all have to embrace this thing because it is a good thing that I believe will create opportunities for Ghanaians and will open up the economy for more money and prosperity to come into it,” he added.

The 24-Hour Economy and Accelerated Export Development Programme, also referred to as “24H+,” is a flagship initiative of the Mahama-led administration.

It seeks to re-engineer Ghana’s productivity framework by extending economic activity beyond traditional working hours and integrating key sectors into a seamless, efficient value chain.

The transformative programme comes with a projected cost of $4 billion.

The government is committing between $300 million and $400 million as seed capital to cover viability gaps and attract private sector investments.

Your wisdom is a resource to the Nation— President Mahama as he honours senior citizens on Republic Day

President John Mahama called for intergenerational cooperation, urging youth and policymakers to learn from the wisdom of senior citizens. He stressed that Ghana’s progress depends on treating all citizens with dignity and creating an inclusive economy.

Speaking a senior Citizen luncheon on July 1,2025, a day that marks Ghana’s republican status, President Mahama elegized the men and women who have served diligently for the progress of the country adding that their experiences have a place in making the country a better place.

“You’ve seen our highest moments and you’ve witnessed our most difficult trials. Your Wisdom is a resource; we cannot take no”
The President further called on the youth and policy makers to tap into the knowledge and skills of the senior citizens to bridge the intergenerational gap.

“I call on our youth and our policy makers, our institutions, to learn from you, to tap into your experience and follow your guidance.” He added.

He said his government will roll out programmes and policies that will place retirees at the center
“This government will focus on building an inclusive economy, a responsive public service and a society that works for the many and not a privilege few” he assured

“This government is also taking concrete steps to restore the dignity to aging and to retirement. We’re strengthening the pension system to ensure that public and private sector workers retire in security rather than in hardship. By implementing our flagship Ghana medical Trust Fund, or as is popularly called Mahama cares, we’re laying the foundation for universal access to affordable health care, especially for older people, for low income and for vulnerable groups, we’re revamping the National Health Insurance Scheme, expanding coverage of geriatric services and prioritizing investment in social protection so that no senior citizen is left behind.” President Mahama intimated.

The event was attended by the Vice President Professor Naana Jane Opoku Agyeman and a host of retirees. President John Dramani Mahama used the occasion to honoure the nation’s senior citizens and reaffirmed the country’s commitment to democratic principles and social progress.

Asiedu Nketiah calls for removal of entire EC leadership

The National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, has demanded the removal of the entire leadership of the Electoral Commission (EC), declaring them “not fit for purpose.”

In a fiery address during an appearance on JoyNews PM Express aired on Wednesday, June 25, he criticized the Jean Mensa-led EC for what he called repeated mismanagement of electoral processes.

NDC Chairman Johnson Asiedu Nketiah has called for the resignation of the EC’s top three leaders, accusing them of gross mismanagement and incompetence.

He cited unresolved issues such as the six-month delay in declaring a winner in the Ablekuma North parliamentary race and the four-year disenfranchisement of voters in the SALL constituencies.

Asiedu Nketiah also pointed out that Ghana’s electoral laws do not permit stalemates, arguing that such outcomes reflect either negligence or a fundamental failure of the Commission’s mandate.

Asiedu Nketiah has framed the issue as symptomatic of a deeper institutional breakdown, calling for a full “reset of the EC” to restore public confidence:

“Resetting the EC means bringing it back to an institution that is fit for purpose. If in any serious country we want to maintain this type of Electoral Commission, then I don’t know what the country is about,” he warned.

He also threatened political action, stating he would continue agitating for their removal until a formal constitutional petition is triggered.

The Electoral Commission (EC) is facing sharp criticism over its leadership and operational failures.

Allegations include systemic lapses, disregard for constitutional provisions, such as the absence of measures to address electoral stalemates and high-profile incidents like the delayed results in Ablekuma North and the disenfranchisement of voters in the SALL constituency.

In response, opposition figures and civil society actors are calling for a full institutional reset through a constitutional petition aimed at restoring public trust and legal compliance.

This issue holds major significance as Ghana prepares for the 2028 elections. Ensuring electoral integrity is essential to maintaining public trust in democratic processes.

Asiedu Nketiah’s demands for scrutiny of the Electoral Commission (EC) challenge the institution’s independence and highlight broader concerns about accountability and transparency in electoral governance.

His public campaign also reflects escalating political tensions, signalling a likely intensification of opposition-EC confrontations in the lead-up to future polls.

President John Mahama holds bilateral meeting with Bill Gates, others ahead of the Gavi Vaccine Alliance pledging session in Brussels, Belgium

President John Dramani Mahama arrived in Brussels, Belgium, as a prominent advocate and ambassador for the GAVI Alliance’s crucial vaccine replenishment efforts.

Ahead of the Gavi Vaccine Alliance pledging session in Brussels, President Mahama held several bilateral meetings. Among these were key discussions with a delegation that included the Gavi Board Chair, José Manuel Barroso, and another with American billionaire Mr. Bill Gates.

During their meeting, Mr. Barroso expressed gratitude for President Mahama’s consistent support for Gavi’s vaccine replenishment efforts and highlighted the alliance’s anticipation of his advocacy at the pledging session.

President Mahama and Mr. Gates discussed Ghana’s health sector interventions. Key topics covered included progress on the Free Primary Healthcare programme, the work of the National Vaccine Institute, and the impact of uncapping the National Health Insurance Fund (NHIS).

On his part, President Mahama thanked Mr. Gates and the Gates Foundation for their extensive philanthropic programmes in Ghana and their vital contribution to the Gavi Vaccine Alliance.

President Mahama will participate in the Global Summit on Health and Prosperity through Immunisation, co-hosted by the European Union, the Gates Foundation, and the Vaccine Alliance.

The Summit aims to secure vital support for Gavi’s ambitious 2026-2030 strategy. This strategy seeks to immunise an additional 500 million children, save over 8 million lives, and protect against up to 150 disease outbreaks, delivering over $100 billion in economic benefits.

Sierra Leone’s Bio is new ECOWAS Chair amid regional challenges

Sierra Leone’s President Julius Maada Bio has been elected as the new Chairman of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government, succeeding Nigeria’s President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

The decision was made at the 67th Ordinary Summit of the regional bloc, which was held on Sunday in Abuja, Nigeria. President Bio will serve a one-year term in the rotating chairmanship.

President Bio, a former Brigadier General, briefly served as military head of state in 1996. He transitioned to civilian leadership, winning the presidential election in 2018 and securing re-election in 2023 amidst significant political contestation.

His ascension to the ECOWAS chairmanship comes at a crucial juncture for the regional body. President Bio inherits a complex geopolitical landscape marked by lingering post-election tensions in his own country, including alleged coup attempts and the continued exile of his predecessor, former President Bai Koroma, in Nigeria.

Currently, four of ECOWAS’ 15 member states are under military rule. The formation of the Alliance of Sahel States (AES) by Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger, and their subsequent withdrawal from ECOWAS, has further compounded the challenges facing ECOWAS.

President John Dramani Mahama, who participated in the summit in Abuja, has since returned home.

Adom Kyei Duah Gives Boxer GH¢50,000 After Defeat at Sharaf Mahama’s Event Despite ‘Miracle Sticker’

Ghanaian pastor Stephen Adom Kyei-Duah recently recognised boxer Joseph Sackey with a generous reward of fifty thousand Ghana cedis after Sackey’s disappointing performance at the Battle of the Beasts boxing event held at the Bukom Arena on Friday, June 13, 2025.

Despite wearing Kyei-Duah’s miracle sticker on his shorts, which is believed by many in Kyei-Duah’s congregation to offer divine protection and favour, Sackey suffered a fifth-round defeat against his British opponent, Abdul Khan.

During a heartfelt service at the Believers Worship Centre, where Prophet Kyei-Duah leads the Philadelphia Movement, he gifted the boxer a significant sum while expressing his pride in Sackey.

Kyei-Duah called him Adom Ba as he welcomed Sackey into his movement and encouraged him to embrace this new identity.

Joseph Sackey wears Kyei-Duah’s sticker on his shorts

Despite the setback in the ring, the young amateur boxer found himself the target of ridicule after footage of him wearing the pastor’s miracle sticker during the match surfaced online.

Traditionally used by Kyei-Duah’s followers as a symbol of protection and favour, the sticker was expected to bolster his performance, but unfortunately, it did not translate into a victory on this occasion.

Following the match, Joseph Sackey fiercely defended his performance, insisting that the defeat was unjust. He expressed frustration towards the referee, claiming that the official had tripped him during the bout, contributing to his loss.

Although he acknowledged feeling dazed from Khan’s punches, he argued that he could have continued fighting if not for the referee’s interference, which ultimately led to the fight being stopped prematurely.

Furthermore, Sackey shared that he had prepared spiritually for the match by utilising Prophet Kyei-Duah’s Grace Miracle Water, Miracle Oil, and Sobolo, a traditional Ghanaian beverage. He felt confident and ready to win before the referee’s alleged actions derailed his chances.

President Mahama Directs Chief of Staff to start collecting 1-month salary of political appointees as Cabinet approves MahamaCares Trust Fund Bill

President John Mahama has directed the Chief of Staff Julius Debrah and the Presidential Advisor on Governmental Affairs, Dr. Valerie Sawyerr to commence receipt of the one-month salary pledge by political appointees to support the Ghana Medical Trust Fund.

This follows the payment of salaries of such appointees. At the launch of the Ghana Medical Trust Fund also known as MahamaCares in April this year, all appointees pledged to donate a month of their salaries to support the Fund.

The Ghana Medical Trust Fund seeks to cover the cost of care and medication for Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) not currently included under the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), thereby complementing it by supporting critical aspects of these conditions. Additionally, the Fund will invest in health infrastructure, medical equipment, specialist training, and research to enhance access to quality healthcare.

Addressing heads of the security who made a presentation of GHS1Million to the Fund at the Presidency on Friday, June 20, 2025, President Mahama indicated that he has directed the collection of such donations.

“I also pledged six months of my salary. Happily, my salary has started coming so I will soon present my own Cheque to cover the pledge I made” he promised

The President has since directed all political appointees to start contributing their one-month salaries to support the operations of the fund.
“I have asked the chief of staff and the presidential advisor of governmental affairs to start the collection of the one-month pledge from all political appointees, ministers, and the appointees at the Presidency”

Meanwhile Cabinet has approved the bill to facilitate the operations of the Fund. The Bill when passed by parliament will offer government the opportunity to appoint trustees to administer the Fund.

According to President Mahama persons who will manage the Fund will be independent of government interference
“Since the launch, we have been working on the bill. I am happy to say only yesterday Cabinet approved the bill for onward transmission to parliament. So once parliament passes it into law, then it opens it up for us to appoint trustees. We are going to appoint independent trustees to administer the funds” he assured
