The High Court has acquitted and discharged Assin North MP James Gyakye Quayson, ending a long-running criminal trial over allegations that he contested the 2020 parliamentary elections while holding dual citizenship.
The ruling, which was delivered today Wednesday, April 9, 2025, dismissed all five charges against Quayson, including forgery, perjury, and false declaration for office.
Prosecutors had argued that Quayson breached the Constitution by filing to contest the 2020 elections while still holding Canadian citizenship.
However, the court ruled that the prosecution failed to prove its case, following a submission of “no case to answer” by the defence.
The judge found that Quayson had begun the process of renouncing his Canadian citizenship before filing his nomination, and thus did not act dishonestly or make any false declarations.
The court also noted inconsistencies in prosecution evidence, including discrepancies in passport summaries and statutory declarations, which further undermined the charges.
Quayson, who has consistently denied wrongdoing, expressed relief at the outcome, which clears the way for him to continue his parliamentary duties without legal obstruction.
